The Archers studio

On 2 January, our sister station Radio 7 featured a series of classic Archers episodes, interspersed with interviews by cast members, with Radio 7's Ben Motley.

If you missed the interviews, here is a selection. They give a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into the working lives of Archers actors.

I love Alison & Richards interview... If Only Vanessa would listen to it she may understand what she has done that is so hideously wrong.

Sorry Keri, but insight says exactly how so many of feel.

[still love you just can't forgive you]

Brilliant photo of our Lynda !

    'When they're well-written, they're very real...'

    Exactly, Alison. Exactly. :)

Oh goodness, what a strange blip in the computer I had - when I'd listened to the interview, instead of going back to the start, it tried to link me to listening to the two most recent episodes!

    Hahahaaa Nice try!

All good stuff, but from the siblings in particular.... Well, in their own words (and apologies for any typos):-

Ben Motley: "What's the lasting appeal of TA? Why are we still here talking about it 60 years after it started?"

RA/Kenton : "Big question. I suppose people like to listen to the details .... and why this one has survived so long - maybe because it has that little bit more time to breathe .... There doesn't always have to be drama after drama, conflict after conflict. So you get maybe a slightly wider view of people's lives ... and I think it's comforting for people ....to listen to a gentle episode... the minutiae of everyday life, really"

AD/Lizzie : "... and there's something magical, I think, as well, that TV doesn't offer, when you're in your own space, at home and listening to these same voices, year in year out and going through perhaps similar experiences..... You build a picture you feel you know these characters and it's very personal . Whereas TV it's presented to you - that's it, ... take it or leave it. With TA we're all whoever the listener wants us to be..."

BM: "And do you feel a weight of responsibility because of - the heritage of the programme? Is that something you try not to worry too much about?

RA/K: "I think you're aware of it because of the reactions a lot of people have to the programme and how how important it is to them..."

Just from one of the interviews. I think it says it all really. ...which begs the question - yet again - as to why editor and/or SWs don't seem to be able to, as they say, get with the program...

[Ex-listener and as it turns out, blogger.... think perhaps it's time I changed my username]

Lynda Snell would make a great Editor for the Archers. With her extensive Panto experience, she understands the meaning of entertainment, unlike some who could be mentioned.

Thanks for including the photo of a recording session in progress but can you credit the members of the production team as well as Charles Collingwood please? I'd be interested to know who they are and what their roles are.

The lady in the foreground is Rosemary Watts, who's directing the episode.

I can't make out the other two, but it would normally be just one person there: a production coordinator (this job used to be called broadcast assistant). So I think in this instance a new arrival is being trained on the job.

Also in the 'cubicle' would be two sound engineers, one playing in recorded sound effects ('grams') and the other mixing the sound and supervising the technical side of the studio.

So nice to hear Alison Dowling's lovely voice again!

I've really missed it since the programme was totally ruined on 2 Jan as I haven't listened since....

When will Whitburn face up to the devasatation she has wrought?

  • Comment number 10.

I think Alison and @5 I_never_write have summed up my feelings about TA exactly and to reiterate, this is why I've also stopped listening.

  • Comment number 11.

Are you all still pretending that everything is OK and that only the 'lunatic fringe' have been upset by the overhyping of a dire story, Keri?

It would be courteous if we received some sort of recognition from VW - she was all over the press like a rash before the even but has been conspicuously quiet since that misjudged blog.

  • Comment number 12.

"Not available in your area". That's a pity - I would have liked to listen to the interviews.

  • Comment number 13.

Thanks for the further details Keri, it's interesting to get a look behind the scenes. The 'cubicle' must be a lot bigger than any that I've ever encountered if it can hold five people and all that equipment!

What ahuge amount of spare leads there are on the hat stand....cannot possibly imagine they would ever all be used... there are even more in the booth.... Wow all that wire... techies play ground or what!

Yes, there is a lot of high-tech stuff there Charley but I find it strangely reassuring that Charles Collingwood and the two unidentified people in shot are holding good, old-fashioned, sheets of A4!
