extract from the archers website

Welcome to the new official website for The Archers.

We hope you'll find that it has all the information you need to get the most out of The Archers, presented in an easy-to-use way.

To familiarise yourself with everything that it has to offer, we recommend that you take the site tour

If you're a user of the old site, you'll recognise many of the features, although they have been spruced up a bit. But there are some completely new areas too.

Blog

One of the most important is this blog. This will be the main source of news about and concerning The Archers (like our old Backstage News area). But now, you can respond directly to the news items using the comments box at the bottom of every post.

Discuss

There are more opportunities to discuss the programme - or see what others are saying - via our Discuss page, which summarises conversations both on out own message board, and elsewhere, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Feedback

Do tell us what you think about the new site. We are currently making some updates and corrections to content, and we'll continue to make improvements in the light of your experiences.

NB - you can get these blog posts delivered (free of charge) to your computer, without having to come back to the site every time. The panel on the right: 'Subscribe to The Archers blog' tells you how.

Keri Davies is an Archers scriptwriter and web producer.

  • Comment number 1.

I like the new site very much, and I think the opportunity to post comments on the blogs is great!

  • Comment number 2.

    1. ""Woodbine Cottage Brookfield Farm's former tied cottage on the village green was bought by Christine Barford and her (now deceased) husband George after their home was petrol bombed by Clive Horrobin."

No. George died while he and Chris were RENTING Woodbine Cottage, and expecting to move back in to the new bungalow.

    2. YET GAIN, Alistair and Jim, speaking characters, are sidelined in favour of Bunty and Reg, silents who have pride of place as “Hebden Family,” but the Lloyds have nowt.

  • Comment number 3.

I am not a new member, by the way.

  • Comment number 4.

It does seem strange that Alistair and Jim are missing from the family tree! Obviously an over-sight, hopefully this can be 'tweaked'!

  • Comment number 5.

I see you are just putting on the positive reactions to the new site, which as I posted yesterday, I do not like, and there were other negative comments.

  • Comment number 6.

I'm looking for the message board. I found it accidently last night, but now can't think where to go for it.

This is NOT a good sign - I've been visiting the Archers board for years - if I can't find the message board, how is a newcomer to even know it exists?!

  • Comment number 7.

Fancy Annie---there may be an easier way to find the Message Boards than this, but I found them by clicking on 'Discuss' on the top banner, then scrolling down and clicking on the green link to the messageboards.

Mo, there are a lot of negative comments on the messageboards, I agree---but then, I'm sorry to say, there always have been, especially on 'Discuss the Archers'!

I'm sure the few tweaks that need to be done to the new website will be sorted soon! I'm not finding any major problems with it, myself. I'm using Internet Explorer 8 and it's all loading perfectly for me.

  • Comment number 8.

Shame that the quizzes still aren't working - that's 2 years and counting....

  • Comment number 9.

The Lakey Hill Climb Quiz is working fine! Just as it has been as far back as I can remember....

  • Comment number 10.

Have been following Archers for about 60 years.I cannot always listen to a programme and am able to follow it by reading the synopsis. I connected to your web site today and could not find the synopsis for Thursday 18th November. Got a couple of lines which said something about hiding and something about Jazzer. I am probably doing something wrong but WHY do you have to change things? The web site as it was was very good and easy to follow. We are not all 20+ and not all of us have ipods. Please think about us olduns'

    Hopefully

    Josephine

Have been listening since my own young years in the Sixties !! (much to the ridicule of my son at times, especially in his teenage years), and only on my recent (early !) retirement discovered there WAS an Archer's website! I see all the people in my mind's eye, and seeing the photos of 'real'actors is not going to change this!

Recent stories about Jazzer.....To me Jazzer will always look like a previous scottish colleague,Fraser, though the real Ryan Kelly bears no ressemblence. Sorry Ryan, you are too slim to be Jazzer!

And by the way my husband is a Scot, so I am not biased by food! We, also, have never seen a fried Marsbar !!

  • Comment number 12.

How pleasant it is to see RosieT's name again. Even though she's pointing out inaccuracies...

  • Comment number 13.

23:05 Friday. Synopsis not available for tonight's episode.

    Pat's anxieties increase.

    Hide full description

  • Comment number 14.

I am having difficulty finding a way to search posts. Is there any way to do this?

  • Comment number 15.

I 'm not sure about the new site. Somethings are easy to find others....... the omnibus I cant find!!

  • Comment number 16.

I see that there's a photo of some bloke pretending to be Tom Archer. He doesn't look like Tom Archer at all, at least not like the Tom Archer I see when I listen to the show.

It might be better not to put up photos as I suspect my Tom Archer might not look like yours, or anyone else's.

  • Comment number 17.

    Site looks much modernised.

However I still cannot find the synopsis - a basic requirement.

If I have missed an episode, I often log in at night just to check what has happened. I may not wish to listen to the full 15 mins, but I do appreciate the synopsis.

The same goes when travelling abroad. It's great to keep in touch by reading a synopsis, but often this basic information is not there.

Or is it really there, but I am being thick and just can't see it. Maybe I need Harry to teach me!

  • Comment number 18.

Excuse me for being pedantic, but Ruairi Donovan is not the half-brother of Adam Macey and Debbie Aldridge, as stated in Ruairi's profile, as they are not Brian's natural children.

  • Comment number 19.

Please get the site designer to TEST the synopsis page. It does not work and it is very frustrating. I hope you have not paid for it yet.

  • Comment number 20.

Why is it no longer possible to read the full synopsis of the day's activities on "The Archers?" When I click on the "Full story" either nothing comes up or two lines. I find the new website confusing and unhelpful so far. I notice others have complained about this so perhaps it's just a glitch. I do hope you can sort it quickly.Veronica

  • Comment number 21.

I echo earlier comments about the synopses now being delayed for a whole week, ie until the audio version is no longer offered. Personally I can live without the synopses, since I am one of those who write our own on The Archers Plot Summaries website (https://www.lowfield.co.uk/archers/%29 except that they tell us who the scriptwriter was! So please can we have this information, at least, immediately after the broadcast.

  • Comment number 22.

Thank you for all your comments. As I said in my post, we are making some updates and corrections, so if you do find something wrong please let us know and we'll put it right as soon as we can.

We have had a few technical problems with the synopsis system, so I'm sorry if there have been occasions when the latest synopsis wasn't visible, but this is the system:

    1. Select the episode you want. The most recent six are on the homepage in the panel at the top. They can also be found on the Catch Up page, along with a link ("Full synopsis archive") to episodes back to 2007.

    2. Click on the link for the synopsis ("Read the synopsis" or "Read the full synopsis") In the archive, click on the date.

    3. This takes you to the "programme page" for that particular episode. If it's from the last seven days you can listen to the programme on iPlayer.

    4. Click on "Show full description (may contain plot spoilers)". This will reveal the synopsis.

We've done it this way so that people coming to listen to the programme don't have their enjoyment spoiled by seeing the synopsis first. Listeners told us this was very important.

  • Comment number 23.

Hi! I'm a relatively new Archers fan in California. I discovered The Archers last June, right after Sid died and Jude dumped Pip. Just wanted to say I like the site redesign and I really appreciate the Blog. It's so much fun to read about the Archers in olden times, Jazzer's chicken recipe, the tree planting, etc. Keep up the good work!

  • Comment number 24.

Over a month on, and Poor Old Alistair is condemned forever to be part of the "Hebden" family.

Surely this is nonsense? Jim and he, plus Shula and Daniel, all four speaking characters, and Lloyds by birth, marriage and adoption, should have their family name taking precedence over the non-speaking Bunty and Reg?

  • Comment number 25.

    > Over a month on, and Poor Old Alistair is condemned forever to be part of the "Hebden" family.

This will be rectified, but we are rather clogged up with work for the 60th anniversary at the moment.

  • Comment number 26.

Thank you, good that the programme takes precedence!

But I look forwars to seeing the Lloyd Family taking the place of the silent Hebdens. Any chance of Kenton getting his own family slot?

  • Comment number 27.

Well, we are coming up for the 3 month anniversary of the revamping of the website, and STILL the Speaking Lloyds are not getting any credit on the Family Tree, but the Never-speaking Hebdens are given Star Billing.

"This will be rectified, but we are rather clogged up with work for the 60th anniversary at the moment."

    you wrote.

That episode was over some time ago, could Alistair stop playing second fiddle (as he has done since this inaccurate Family Tree was commissioned on the old dna board?), please?

  • Comment number 28.

Sorry, Rosie T, but that episode was just the start - we have been 'promised' a decade of fallout.

At which time we will be marking (celebrating) the 70th anniversary. By then there will, surely, be a new editor - or TA will be no more.

In either case Alistair will still be sidelined, and Daniel's generation will be grabbing the headlines.

That is, if Ambridge still exists and hasn't been turned into a major housing development and out-of-town retail experience.

  • Comment number 29.

I was politely asking about the Archers Family Tree, on this website, not griping about the programme.

  • Comment number 30.

And here we are, 3 months (plus) on, with the celebratory episode aired, the celeb appearance now over, the Mailbox Reunion Party done. and still Alistair is sidelined in the Family Tree.

Sorry, Keri, are there many more celebrations to take place before the Four year old family tree is updated? Are they going on all year, and shall I ask again in 2012?

  • Comment number 31.

It's a fair question. These and numerous other small changes are currently part of a tendering process with the independent company who built the new site for us. The wheels are grinding slowly, but they are grinding.

  • Comment number 32.

Thank you! It is in my diary for December 18th!

(Though I would dispute that it is a "small change" and I have been grinding on about it since the middle aged board got this wrong 3? 4? years ago)

  • Comment number 33.

Well, I see that time has _not_ been made to update Alistair's family, but time /has/ been found to add characters from a spin off programme!

i do love the Archers, and would like this site to reflect knowledge about the programme that has been going for 60 years.

    Please?

  • Comment number 34.

Well, half a year since the new site was made.

Alistair is still part of the Hebden family, I see, whereas Natalie we are told on Blog, is at "St Thomas More RC School."

Poor chap, condemned to live in the shadow of Mark and Mark's family.

And Joanna, Mark's sister, gets no mention at all!

  • Comment number 35.

Still no progress on the Lloyd Family Tree?

  • Comment number 36.

It's grinding exceedingly slow, Rosie, but we do know it needs doing.

  • Comment number 37.

Rosie - well done for not letting this go.

If I'd hired the services of a company to redesign a website I may consider not paying them the full amount owed until ALL the work was done.

Cripes, how long does it take to alter a couple of names.

  • Comment number 38.

Good Darwin, Poor Old Alistair has been cut out altogether!

The Families of Ambridge now include "Hebdens" without Shula being married to POA!

    Shock! Horror!

I would say "Thank you for changing it," were it for the better, but this is crazee!

  • Comment number 39.

Noted and on the list, Rosie.

  • Comment number 40.

A scant month's time will have this site still having compounded the error of the old site, which had 3, or was it 4 years, of Alistair a member of the Hebden family.

Will the list be any further forward by then, do you think, please?

  • Comment number 41.

Only a week before another YEAR is added to Poor Old Alistair's lack of importance

  • Comment number 42.

I had hoped that we would be in a position to right this ignominious wrong by now, but the tool which was being developed has had to have some further work done on it. I live in hope...

  • Comment number 43.

Alas! Poor Ali! They done him wrong.

[Big Sigh] [Brave, sad smile] Thanks, anyway.

Maybe this time next year, Shula and Alistair will have split up anyway, and Erin will be Danny's stepmother?
