A Class Act

Donald Runnicles with his assistant conductor, RSAMD Conducting Fellow Jessica Cottis
Earlier this year the BBC SSO and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) cemented a unique partnership that gives Academy students opportunities to learn within the BBC SSO and work alongside one of the world's top conductors, Donald Runnicles.
Conducting masterclasses with the BBC SSO chief conductor consisted of three students from the RSAMD and Conducting Fellow Jessica Cottis each conducting the full orchestra for a movement, followed by feedback and tips from Donald.
We filmed each masterclass, featuring music from Elgar and Beethoven, and then interviewed each participant about their experience.
The conducting students involved were Duk-Kyung Chang, Alejandro De Palma Garrido and Hamdan Al-Shuelly. Jessica Cottis, the RSAMD Conducting Fellow, assistant to Donald Runnicles and recent star of BBC Two Scotland series Talking Music, also featured in a masterclass.
You can view the results of this invaluable learning resource below. We're planning to repeat the exercise in the New Year along with concerto masterclasses featuring RSAMD soloists and their mentors from within the orchestra.
