Talking Music

Tuesday night saw the first part of an exciting new four-part documentary series featuring the BBC SSO hitting the screens on BBC Two Scotland. The series, called Talking Music, looks at the work of the BBC SSO and gives an exclusive gander at what goes on behind the scenes at one of Britain's leading orchestras.
The series features interviews with the orchestra's team of leading conductors and players, composers who write for the BBC SSO, and soloists from the classical and pop music world who perform alongside the orchestra, including violinist Nicola Benedetti and Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian and God Help the Girl fame. The series also includes lots of footage of the orchestra in action playing works from classical composers such as Sibelius, Elgar and Dvorak, alongside works by contemporary composers Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and James MacMillan, and includes some rather nifty pop music courtesy of God Help the Girl.
The first episode focuses on three of the orchestra's conductors: Superstar Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles, Principal guest conductor Ilan Volkov and Jessica Cottis, Conducting Fellow at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
The first part is available for your viewing pleasure on BBC iPlayer right now:
