Ewan has problems with intimacy which he masks with his ladies' man image. Typically for someone who lacks genuine confidence, status is very important to Ewan and he's happy to wait a long time to get what he thinks he's due. He has a chip on his shoulder; as far as Ewan is concerned the world owes him a bit of a favour. Ewan has a tendency to blame others for his misfortune and, until recently, has avoided responsibility. Luckily for Ewan it's not all bad. Maybe there is a heart in there somewhere.
Ewan's childhood was shattered when his father Lenny left his Mother, Mary, for Lydia. Ewan was only seven at the time but it forced him to grow up fast. Initially both Ewan and his brother, Rory lived with Mary. Times were tough. The threesome moved from Glasgow to Nottingham and was isolated from friends and family. When Rory decided to stay with his father after an extended visit back to Glasgow, Ewan wanted to do the same but, even at seven, he knew that would be too painful to his mother. Little Ewan stayed where he didn't want to out of loyalty. There's only one person Ewan blamed for his situation - Lenny.
In fact, both parents let Ewan down - and badly. Mary never got over Lenny's betrayal and spent Ewan's formative years making sure he didn't either. The Marines provided a way out and for a few years Ewan made a real go of it. He was dismissed after he was found in flagrante with a female officer. After that it was back to mother. Even more angry at the world following his dismissal from the forces, Ewan was easy prey for his mother and she set about using him in her revenge plot against Lenny. When Ewan realised his mother's plans for Lenny were to kill him he switched sides and saved his father's life.
Who knew this would be a decision that would come back to haunt Ewan? Despite looking after his father when at his lowest ebb, Ewan's loyalty is rocked once again when he discovers the depths of his father's deception - not only has Lenny lied and paid an imposter to play Lydia's son, Ewan starts to suspect that Lenny has been involved in his own mother's disappearance. When it is confirmed that Mary is dead, Ewan vows revenge upon Lenny.
He may not be able to physically take Lenny's life but he does the next best thing by exposing the lies and telling his family the truth. A desperate Ewan tries to keep Lydia and Lee safe from Lenny but events spiral out of control culminating in a final, tragic, showdown between father and son. Ewan breathed his last in Shieldinch.
