Following the death of Nelson Mandela we are making some changes to the Radio 4 schedule to reflect on his life.

On Friday 6 December at 9pm Allan Little presents Out of the Darkness – The Triumph of Nelson Mandela. Instead of Last Word today we will repeat Fergal Keane’s programme Mandela in His Own Words.

On Saturday 7 December From Our Own Correspondent at 11.30am is a Nelson Mandela special and at 8pm Making Mandela, a documentary about the anti-apartheid movement, replaces Archive on 4.

A commemorative Sunday Worship is live from St Martin in the Fields and next week’s Book of the Week is Nelson Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.

Other regular programmes will also cover events in South Africa.

Online you can hear a selection of archive programmes including Desmond Tutu’s appearance on Desert Island Discs and The Reunion that looks back on Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.

Keep an eye on the Radio 4 schedule for other changes.

There are also additions to the Radio 4 Extra schedule as Annie Lennox introduces three programmes from the archive.

On Wednesday morning Muriel Gray looks back at the 1988 Free Nelson Mandela concert in When Pop and Politics Meet; there’s a programme about the Soweto Gospel Choir on Thursday and John Cavanagh tells the story of N’kosi Sikelele i’Africa, the protest song that’s now part of the South African national anthem.
