Fred Frith
It’s the progressive and unorthodox approach of Fred Frith that marks him out as one of the most adventurous axemen around, still a pioneer more than 40 years after he started out. This week we’ve a previously unbroadcast set from Frith recorded last summer at London’s Café Oto.

Fred's Kit
'Not Wes Montgomery' is how BBC 6Music presenter and Frith fan Stuart Maconie describes him before the concert – definitely a fair comment! The guitarist deliberately challenges preconceptions of his instrument by using a whole toolkit of objects to extract new sounds through scrapes, slides and percussive techniques. It's an approach that bassist John Edwards and drummer Mark Sanders feel ideally suited to, creating an ensemble sound in which it's sometimes impossible to tell where one instrument begins and another ends.
Join me for this programme at the slightly later time of 11.45pm on Monday 12 August or listen online for seven days after broadcast.
