We round off our 2012-13 Barbican season as we started – with a concert featuring music by Mahler and Shostakovich and, as you might expect from the BBC SO, a new work. Ingo Metzmacher conducts a selection from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs with leading Danish baritone Johan Reuter, plus Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11, his powerful and dramatic evocation of the tragic 1905 revolution, and the UK premiere of German composer Wolfgang Rihm’s Nähe-Fern-1.
Here, you can watch BBC SO sub-principal viola Phil Hall - our regular orchestra blogger - introduce a particularly poignant moment from the Shostakovich, which has many historical associations.
BBC SO violist Phil Hall describes a special moment in Shostakovich's 11th Symphony ...
Do join us in the Barbican Hall at 7.30pm or listen on BBC Radio 3 from 2.00pm on Tuesday 28 May.
