#EducatingGrimmy!

Movie Critic

We’re launching a new film blog! All this week on Radio 1, we’re celebrating the world of film and I’m taking it upon myself to teach Grimmy to love movies. Sounds easy? It’s not. Grimmy notoriously has the attention span of a distracted goldfish and HATES WATCHING FILMS, so I’ve got just one week to educate him and I’ll need your suggestions otherwise this week is going to be tricky...

Luckily, we’ve got loads of huuuuge film guests in throughout the week to keep him occupied. Vanessa Hudgens is in on Tuesday, followed by Daniel Radcliffe, Miley Cyrus, Nicolas Cage and some guy called Hugh Jackman rounding it off on Friday. But we’re kicking off movie week today with Nick Frost and my idol, Simon Pegg. I’ve met Simon Pegg a couple of times before, I may have mentioned on air a few times that my favourite film is Shaun of the Dead, so I couldn’t think of a better way to start Educating Grimmy!

If you haven’t heard of me before, I do movies stuff for Radio 1 and 1Xtra, mainly film reviews with Greg James and Trevor Nelson and I honestly couldn’t have a more exciting job. It sounds horribly cringe but I’m doing something that I really love - watching films on a daily basis and then talking them up or slagging them off and now I get to share it with (or force it upon) Grimmy! I’ve been working at R1 and 1xtra for a couple of years now and have already met so many incredible actors; Denzel Washington; Idris Elba; Hugh Jackman; Carey Mulligan; Emily Blunt; James McAvoy and the most ridiculous of all – Johnny Depp.

I’ve seen loads of brilliant films over the past couple of years and even more crap ones but the genre we’re concentrating on today is COMEDY! I don’t think you can go wrong with a classic Austin Powers film and you’re usually onto a winner with a Ben Stiller (see what I did there?) but the one film I just don’t get is Anchorman. I KNOW, I KNOW, I’m majorly in the minority here but Will Ferrell doesn’t do it for me, unless he’s cameo-ing. I’d rather watch Wedding Crashers on repeat for a week than 20 minutes of Blades of Glory. I’m sure a lot of you will have a different opinion, let me know! Everyday we’ll need you to text and tweet your favourite movie suggestions to 81199 or @R1Breakfast and then we’ll narrow it down. Tonight’s film is There's Something About Mary, a classic Cameron Diaz/Ben Stiller collaboration with that scene that everyone remembers oh-so-well…

So at 6pm, I’m off to Grimmy’s pad to make sure he sits through an entire comedy without a) falling asleep, b) talking all over it or c) trying to sneak 17 Again into the DVD player. We’ll be starting at 6pm every night this week and if you can get hold of the film, watch and tweet with us! We’ll be doing a tweet-along from @R1Breakfast, so get involved with #EducatingGrimmy!

Good luck everybody!
