Five and I'm out

The last day of Educating Grimmy is upon us. It was animation yesterday, so Dev, Sara Cox and I all invited ourselves to Nick’s for one final hurrah, in the form of Disney Pixar film, Up. It was interrupted with drilling, dogs and talk of going to the pub (a well-received idea). Asked Grimmy what he thought of the film so far, response was, “Rhianna. I hate all films.” So that was an optimistic end to Educating Grimmy.

The first 10 minutes of Up are really beautiful and moving, pretty dark in places - Ellie and Carl are told they can't have children - and maybe a little too slow for Grimmy. The pace picks up when an elderly Carl and his house take off with the help of thousands of helium balloons and an enthusiastic but uninvited guest on board in the shape of Russell, a Boy Scout with a penchant for 'Helping the Elderly'. What's not to love?

Today's sort of genre is action. I say sort of because today, our screening is not a classic. We're not going to be round at Grimmy's flat. We're not going to be plagued by drilling, dogs or general distractions. There will be no Bruce Willis in a vest, no Tom Cruise scaling a skyscraper and no Daniel Craig looking suave in a bow-tie. We (and 120 listeners) are going to a preview screening of The Wolverine in Manchester, after a visit from the dashing Hugh Jackman this morning.

I'm feeling relieved today, because I don't have to convince Grimmy that he loves this film. He's seen it, I haven't. Roles are reversed. He loves it, he wants me to love it too. Tempted to talk all the way through it although I get the feeling it wouldn't annoy him as much as it does me... General consensus is that because expectations are so low for this film, responses have been positive. I loved the originality of X-Men and can't wait to see those metal claws emerge from Wolverine's fists tonight.

We sadly won't be tweeting throughout this one so your timelines will remain devoid of film commentary but you will be able to catch my review of The Wolverine on Thursday with Greg on Radio 1 or Friday with Trevor on 1Xtra. Thanks for joining us (if you did) this week to help Educate Grimmy. I don't think it worked - Grimmy remains uneducated in the world of film despite best efforts - but we saw some classic movies and I got to pretend I was part of the R1 Breakfast show for a week.

Blog comments will be available here in future. Find out more.
