Celebrating heroes

During the floods which hit York and North Yorkshire in late September 2012 and again in December 2012, listeners told BBC Radio York about the wonderful people who went the extra mile to help them. The BBC Radio York Flood Hero Awards gave a chance to celebrate those special people.

The team wanted to hear about the good work people did, whether that was a person, a group or a team who went above and beyond what was expected at that time of crisis. Radio York received many nominations in the eleven different categories (there was also a category for the bravest animal).

At the awards ceremony on Tuesday 26 March the winners included officers from the RSPCA North of England, the Salvation Army and a community nurse.

BBC Radio York worked in partnership with BBC Outreach to find people whose bravery might not have otherwise been recognised or brought their stories to people right across Yorkshire.
