Ouch weblog: individual blog entry

6 Jan 06, 12:00 AM - Disability graphic of the week

Posted by Lady Bracknell

Oh dear. There's a rather heated debate going on across the pond in relation to plans for a new fountain in Washington Square Park. Margie Rubin - who belongs to a group called, 'Disabled in Action' - is threatening to sue the Parks Department under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) over the fact that the new fountain won't have a permanent wheelchair ramp.

But, despite the photographic evidence in The Villager of the fact that people paddle in the pool on hot summer days, the designer of the renovated fountain, George Vellonakis, is arguing that the fountain is officially off-limits to everybody, so there's no need to instal a ramp.

Now, admittedly, this isn't a particularly gripping story in itself. However, Lady Bracknell thought the graphic which has been designed to illustrate the story on the Gothamist website definitely deserved a wider airing.

Why has the person pictured got both a wheelchair AND a stick? Seems like overkill if you ask me.

In reply to James Medhurst, I used to have both a wheelie & a stick. I needed the stock to help me transfer to a car, go to the bathroom, etc.

How about the NYC Dept of Parks & Recreation making the fountain accessible and offer all terrain vehicles (wheelie) which are not available at any NYC Park & Recreation waterfront facilities. She actually is interested in seeing the DIA singers of whom approximately 75% use wheelies into the fountain performance area during the 7 months of the year, that it is dry!
