Following the sad news of Ramones drummer Tommy Ramone, second from left below, passing away, we at Now Playing invite you to put together a special playlist celebrating the punk visionaries and their music, this Sunday - (13 July 6-8pm).

Online tributes poured in after this tweet from the band's official Twitter account this morning (12 July): "We are saddened to announce the passing of Ramones founding drummer Tommy (Erdelyi) Ramone. #RIP Tommy Ramone". He was 65 and had reportedly been receiving treatment for cancer. 6 Music's very own Lauren Laverne tweeted "Incredibly sad to hear of the death of Tommy Ramone. My band were lucky enough to support the Ramones at their last London gig when we were 16…RIP Tommy, thanks for the music". Further tributes ranged from comedian Noel Fielding to actor/director Paddy Considine and My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way.
Tommy played drums on and co-produced the band’s first three albums: ‘Ramones’, ‘Leave Home’ and ‘Rocket to Russia’. He remained the band's drummer between 1974 and 1978 but returned in 1984 to co-produce the album ‘Too Tough to Die’. The Ramones played their last concert in 1996, before disbanding. By 2004, three of the founding members, Joey Ramone, guitarist Johnny Ramone, and bassist Dee Dee Ramone - had passed away.
But the band have left a legacy, and a body of work that changed the face of punk music forever. In the words of Tommy himself: “It wasn't just music in the Ramones: it was an idea. It was bringing back a whole feel that was missing in rock music – it was a whole push outwards to say something new and different”.
So what should be in a Ramones playlist?
- The big songs like ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’, Blitzreig Bop’ and ‘Sheena Is A Punkrocker’ or anything from their 14 studio albums?
- Bands they influenced like The Undertones, Dead Kennedys, Nirvana and The Strokes?
- Who influenced the Ramones? The Stooges and The Who?
- Their contemporaries from the New York scene?
- Or any other musical connection that you think is deserving of a place on this special playlist.
But do make sure you give us your reasons behind your selections for a better chance of making the playlist.
