#GeorgeMartin6Music – Help us compile a great George Martin-inspired playlist

Dan Cocker

Producer

“I read the news today oh boy…”

Perhaps that’s how many of us woke to the sad news that the extraordinary music producer Sir George Martin had passed away on Wednesday. 2016 claims yet another cherished figure from the world of entertainment.

On this Sunday’s Now Playing @6Music Tom Robinson invites 6 Music listeners to create a tracklist in honour of one of the most significant producers in the history of pop music via social media as well as reading your tribute messages.

We can’t imagine what The Beatles would’ve sounded like without Sir George’s vision and patience. He was undoubtedly the man who made it happen musically for the Fab Four, and in the words of Paul McCartney, “He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour. If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George.”

George Martin will be most remembered for his work with The Beatles, but he also produced over 700 records, wrote film scores and worked with music's greatest talents. We want you to suggest songs and artists that complement and celebrate Sir George’s body of work.

His early background was in orchestra, then he worked with comedians such as Peter Sellers and Bernard Cribbins, and at the age of 29 he became head of the Parlophone label, recording artists such as Shirley Bassey, Matt Monro, Johnny Dankworth and Humphrey Lyttelton.

Post-Beatles he worked with Sting, Jose Carreras, Elton John, Ultravox, Jeff Beck, the Mahavishnu Orchestra and he even did Bond Themes. You could also suggest any of the hundreds of artists who recorded at his AIR studios, set-up by Sir George in 1969.

You’re in control of the music so let us know what Sir George-related music you want us to play – including the reasons WHY - to Tom Robinson via the hashtag #GeorgeMartin6Music to help create a playlist.
