Friday 11 February 2011
Tonight we are dedicating the whole programme to the momentous events in Egypt, where after weeks of protests by anti-government demonstrators in Cairo and other cities, Hosni Mubarak has stepped down as president.
Our reporter Tim Whewell is in the thick the crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square - you can follow his live tweets here.
He will bring us the latest on what is happening on the programme.
We will assess the impact on Egypt, the region and wider global relations and ask what the future holds.
Join presenter Mishal Husain and all of our experts at 10.30pm on BBC Two.

This evening we're devoting virtually the entire programme to Egypt.
Our correspondent Tim Whewell - who has recently returned from Cairo - will be giving us his assessment of where the revolution is now.
Bit confused. Did he pop back on Tuesday because he forgot to switch the gas off? Or is BA doing a deal on frequent gadabout miles? Or were all the other BBC reporters lonely?

What we see may not be what we get? In Egypt the system was turned off for a time, so though I'm absolutely certain that Tim Whewell was in Cairo when he said he was, might the time be not that far off, not necessarily in the UK but in other countries where what people see on the box and on the net, might not actually be what is going on, but which back to post Number 16 what Number 1 wants us to see, or think?

Wolfowitz were the heroes of the hour! What a load of tosh. As for the American 'Soft Power 2.0' angle I'd
guess that last thing the activist who turned up to their conference needs after the strike in Suez needed
was endorsement from these creeps ... The US State Department under Bill Clinton pursued a democracy
agenda in Swaziland, for example, by putting books with names like 'The Right To Strike' in the windows
of the old US Information Service library in Mbabane before that kind of activity was taken back to State,
so there is nothing particularly Republican about the United States promoting values of their Constitution.
Big mistake though to confuse that with the kind of manipulative, CIA activity pursued by less progressive
voices in the US military-industrial complex across the world over the years from Chile to the Middle East.
Hussein did well to get Wolfowitz to give the game away by asking him whether Saudi Arabia would be the
next dictatorship to be toppled by the Facebook generation ...... that fairly shut him up did it not?! And the
role of other Western agencies involved in so-called 'soft power diplomacy' remains deeply ambivalent. The
dreadft British Council for example supports atrocious regimes around the world including Libya and Egypt.
In Egypt their website was until this week still hailing the Mubarak regime as a 'liberal democracy' and their
commercial English language business deals with Libya featured in this week's disclosures about the release
of the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, BP and correspondence between Libya and Gordon Brown ..

Floride is a known poison..this fact has been known for years. Surprising that most still think its good for teeth. A by-product from the aluminium industry if I remember rightly. Not knowing what to do with waste product in the 1950s, they introduced it into toothpaste as a filler and was given bogus teeth protecting health benefits. No independent study has proven this but is still peddled as such. Read the back of a tube of tooth paste and educate yourself Mindys mate. And if you ever go to the States, don't drink the water. I think they stopped putting sodium flouride in the UK water some time back, so you should be alright.
As for Aspartame..the sweetener, well thats another story ..and another poison. Next time you buy a diet drink/chew on gum...give it some thought.

We have had many generations of schooling by state-edict (i.e. 'because Nanny says so'). We now start the poor mites at two, such that school should be re-named 'FOLLOW-ON FORMULA'. By the time they leave, their primary skill is 'school' - i.e. they are INSTITUTIONALISED. And because we ALL go through the same ticky-tacky sausage machine, we all come out 'just the same', and UNABLE TO SEE WHAT HS BEEN DONE TO US (except those destined for eccentricity, dysfunction - or prison).
The Nanny State is, de facto, fundamental to the school-based society. Now we must suffer the (oh so Westminster) subterfuge of being 'set free' - but only after legs, back and mind have been broken. (Remember what Geoffrey Howe said to Maggie?)
Nanny has not been dismissed; she has not gone anywhere. Her finest achievement has been to become barely perceptible. We have come to accept schooling, in place of maturing (parenting) - just as Winston came to love Big Brother.
If you find a hint of humour in the above - I have failed.

You mean like the mental disorder liberals display when they utter something.
Is their a known equation for this? I'd like to have it on a flip chart whilst I go around the country explaining my theories on 'Liberalism is a mental disorder and should be treated as such"..I already have some of the causes down for this illness, two of which is believing everything BBC news trots out - or at least not having the ability to read between the lines - and what the leftwing teachers teach.

ridiculous. This revolt was led by the people, not 'vanguards' of super-intelligent aliens or any 'reptilian' followers. Alex jones is still alive because he is a paranoid, disinformation feed.
this is a long point by point to the video - instead of going out!:
yes, the US gives money in education aid. I rather doubt they deliberately pay to create Western-phobia, however.
why shouldn't US citizens get the option of learning Arabic in schools? It is one of the big 3 Civilisations, and the US seems intent on tying its future with the Islamic world. If the US Govt IS promoting Arabic in schools, this seems common-sense, really. Not some kind of culture war. God this guy is so paranoid it could give me haemorrhoids.
and this is all part of the "tower of babel, balkanisation, multicultural moves". You DO realise this guy is crazy, yes?
when the US giving education aid to buy books, and offering students the chance to learn a useful foreign language become evidence of a conspiracy involving the Old Testament, Cold War politics and something he doesn't define but clearly hates anyway, he has a few bolts loose.
so... this should be fun. :)
"a socialist, muslim Caliphate"
ponder that. When you hear the people proclaiming they want a direct democracy, utilising electronic communication. Or is he afraid Egypt and other Muslim countries will bring in universal Health Care for its citizens? Is he afraid the State will take over and deliver efficiently those welfare services now provided in Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood or other private bodies?
i think the Egyptians would welcome such moves by a new Govt. Hell, we would in the UK.
is this guy genuine? I'd only seen parodies of him before, i hadn't realised he was actually worse than any parody.
The US, as Britain did in its time, supports as many sides in a civil conflict as possible. Yes, the US supported factions that wanted democracy. The also supported Mubarak and the generals, he should remember. So yes, the US probably supported liberation factions before the prising in Egypt. That doesn't make the US to have controlled the events in Egypt on the street.
odd that he claims that the Mujahadeen become "al Qaeda", because it is quite well known that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are allied, and the majority of the Mujahadeen and the Taliban were deadly enemies. This is very well known, - and you an actually hear a catch in his voice as he says this little piece of deliberate disinformation!
more and more becoming obvious why "he is still alive", barrie.
he then gives a good piece of truth, about a conspiracy amongst certain US officials during the Bush years, that appears to give credence to the notion that some of these potential terrorists were helped along, before 9/11.
the aid to the potential 9/11 terrorists - this conforms with most other evidence. The 9/11 crowd were patsies, although it does seem they went to the US to perpetrate some atrocity anyway. There are two sets of bad guys in this equation.
what he calls "Globalists" i would call "Imperialists". There are also good people who are Globalist in thought, but very few Imperialists. However, with that change, which is significant, i agree with his view that there has been deliberate long-term support for radical Islam in order to justify a police State back at home here in the West.
and the deliberate prevention of 3rd world development. Also correct.
his problem with seeing Globalist KKKorporates as the prime movers in Egypt is that many US/Multinationals are scared witless by the thought of a nationalist Egyptian Govt preventing their ongoing exploitation of the people here. This was a movement of the People, not of the KKKorporates or Imperialists. Although no doubt using disinformation and their control of the mainstream media, attempts will be made to hijack the process.
i feel sorry for him that he can only react to such a wonderful event as the peaceful overthrow of a dictator by the people in a spontaneous evolution as evidence for a global conspiracy. I am glad there weren't people like him back n 1989, and everyone could freely enjoy the good feelings that came from events like this.
ok, now he has gone off the deep end again. "Masters of 3-dimensional chess" - then how come the World is in such bad state? How come they were taken completely by surprise by events in Egypt? The Imperials and KKKorporates may have better education and access to knowledge, but they are not super-minds. His paranoia creeps out again.
"They don't want a pliant Dictator that does what they say, but brings stability to the Middle East".
look at this statement. Look at it *seriously*. "They don't want a pliant Dictatorship".
..?
He assumes that such a Dictator *could* "bring stability".
and he doesn't think the KKKorporates and Imperials would prefer such an arrangement, even though their profits and interests are tied up there. Now, some *Globalists* are indeed happy the Egyptian people are free to choose their own future again, through their sheer bravery, and desire for Democracy. I am one of them, and there are many many others who felt joy at seeing people choosing Freedom over Slavery.
Such people will not accept another "pliable Dictator", and such a scenario would not bring "stability". I wonder why Alex has so little faith in the goodness of Egyptians they couldn't manage this into a transition to Democracy. He even appears to be scared by the possibility..?
now the disinformation is flowing deep and fast. Any 'New World Order' 'plan' involves the growth in power and influence of the KKKorporates. The revolt in Egypt has upset that there, potentially. It is the KKKorporate vision that leads to 1984, these uprisings have potentially disrupted those plans. Oddly enough, the KKKorporate plans are directly harmful to the largest number of their own employees, as if the KKKorporate behaviour to their own employees isn't bad enough already. I'm surprised more of them don't whistle-blow on what happens.
he admires Joe McCarthy. My sainted Aunts. I'm not sure i can stomach any more of this.
--------------
barrie: there is not an "it" - there are "its". Pick-n-choose. :)
i would advise a reading of the excellent Robert Anton Wilson's 'Prometheus Rising', a superb training of the mind to reject learn how to judge, and receive new ideas and paradigms. A reread might be good as well, if already read. :). "If one of the aims is to preserve Human existence on the Earth, which policies have the best chance of leading in that direction?" That is a constant question i held in mind, during my studies.
its not one i would hesitate to recommend. :)
interesting video Brossen, but interesting for many wrong reasons. Thanks for the view though.

Hamas in the Occupied Territories were ready to recognise the Israeli State when they were elected, but then the Israelis invaded Lebanon. Then it invaded Gaza. Then it attacked an international Peace/Aid convoy. Te Israeli state has done everything it can to prevent its opposition declaring peace. If the worst comes to the worst, and IF the Egyptian People vote for the MB in large percentages, and then IF the MB only hold the one election, then they may have swapped one dictatorship for another, but at least *they* will have chosen it!

so your example of Hamas not only wrongly characterised Hamas as being implacable war-makers, you also denigrate the Egyptians desire for a better future.

does this mean Suleiman is leaving office? Or is this simply a managed event to transfer powers to the man who is now monitoring ALL internet and mobile communications to find organisers? Hopefully the former.
btw, when will Washington come to realise that virtually ALL their problems would be solved by convincing its Israeli aid recipients to stop abusing its neighbours, and start by following UN Declarations on the rights of an occupied people and land?? Not only is "to prevent another genocide" not a sufficient reason to ethnically cleanse land under International Law, it is the most likely candidate to be the reason why they would need "Self-Defence" when they have the best armed forces in the region by far. If they stopped abusing the Palestinians, they wouldn't have anything to worry about the Evolutions happening around them. It is a shame that their own policies have made Israel support cruel Dictators, this is neither what Judaism is about, nor what Israel was supposed to be.
I hope the Israelis make Peace with everyone, that is the best way their culture and civilisation can survive.
Generals, these are *your* peoples. By removing some of your exploitation, you will allow development and a growth in wealth beyond your dreams for all. The West did not develop because of Corporates, or Monarchies, or any such nonsense - it developed because the People kept more of their own money, fuelling economic development. If you turn local companies into cooperatives, you will spur economic growth at the low end of the scale. People will have more money to spend, and there will be economic growth across the economy. As the UK history shows, giving a bit back by the rulers spurs incredible wealth in the long run. The same is as true of Egypt as the UK. And it creates much Stability, both for and from the workers, and those who are economically dependent on the workers.
plus, the above is fully in line with Shariah, so should be accepted easily by the Islamic clerics.
this HAS to be better than trying to maintain the oppression of the Egyptian people? Your children will benefit greatly.

Since you apparently subscribe to the eco-fascist ideology ( transition towns etc ) you can hardly comment objectively on Alex Jones or Glen Beck given how much effort they have both put into exposing the Climate Scam for the investment vehicle it has become. The problem remains that both Jones and Beck's ideology is flawed, the only reason the Corporate Nazi thought police allow them to continue. Take Alex Jones support for Ron Paul for example, Paul is a dangerous full blown libertarian who could plunge the USA into a virtual civil war if ever elected as president. Beck has taken the focus off the stock market parasites more recently, concentrating on individuals like Sorros and both hold the pretence that we need to go back to 1776 to solve our collective problems. Things have moved on since then and the major threat to our freedoms is corporate enslavement which could never have been anticipated even only 100 years ago. The same principle applies to the European Human Rights Act, any new alleged British bill of rights needs to reflect modern circumstances.
