MORE DETAIL ON TONIGHT'S PROGRAMME:
We've heard all about the Dave and Nick love-in, but what about the rest of the coalition?
Tonight Michael Crick will be looking at working relations across the cabinet, pinpointing where there is likely to be agreement, and where discord.
Justin Rowlatt is in Thirsk and Malton where the differences between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are out in the open as candidates fight each other in the delayed constituency poll despite the parties' new coalition at Westminster.
And we'll end the programme with a discussion about the extraordinary changes that have occurred in British politics over the past week.
Might the Tories be rehabilitated by the partnership and no longer be seen as the nasty party? And could the coalition deal Lib Dems a hammer blow come the next election?
ENTRY FROM 1155BST
They are the couple faced with perhaps the hardest job of all ministers in the new government - to sort out the economy and banks - and tonight our Political editor Michael Crick will be scrutinising the relationship between new workmates, Vince Cable and George Osborne.
Could they make or break the coalition?
Our Diplomatic editor Mark Urban will be watching events as the new UK Foreign Secretary William Hague meets his US counterpart Hillary Clinton in Washington DC.
Justin Rowlatt is in Thirsk and Malton where the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are to fight each other in the delayed election despite the parties' new coalition at Westminster.
And we'll end the programme with a discussion about the extraordinary changes that have occurred in British politics over the past week. Might the Tories be rehabilitated by the partnership and no longer be seen as the nasty party? And could the coalition deal Lib Dems a hammer blow come the next election?
More details later.

Conversely could Labour be marginalised as they can't take up the Socialist Mantle and the Social Democratic label is too closely associated with New Labour of Iraq and 10p fame.
Their new leadership candidates are cosmetic though able and intelligent - but there are no great thinkers in there to chart a new course but are more likely to go with a catchy slogan.
The Tories could be rehabilitated but in shedding their reactionary right they can't make up ground in the heavily occupied centre.
The Lib Dems won't let them merge or collapse them and neither will they let the Labour/New Labour coalition take their ground.
Its clear that first past the post belongs to another era when class politics determined the shape of the choice for electors.
Those days are gone largely as even the elite nature of much of the cabinet is not the issue for most - its not where they are from but where they are going that counts.
In the long run people will go with those who have consistently promoted an open and inclusive and fair society obtained via a proportional representation system that elects to the Commons and the current Lords.
Enough of men in tights and also the sofa politics of neo-Presidential cliques that answered to nobody.

For instance Cable would break up the big banks but though I support his views in general I can't quite see that four smaller banks who are taking the same total volume of risk unreasonably could still be too big for our economy and mean four times the regulation. I do accept that some banks could just be too enormous.
But is it the bank size or the risk that they take that is the big issue? How do you ensure that Repo 105 and Fabulous Freds and vague fraud laws and internal audits make it impossible for a clique of six, I think, to take down Lehmans and nearly the global economy?
Then again if the regulation means that we subdivide the retail and investment activities perhaps size won't be the biggest issue.
So far as I know there is still a lot of potentially toxic debt out there so the issues are in sharp focus I hope.
But I suppose that Osborne and Cable do have a huge problem in that they have to send out clear signals and take coherent action quickly.
Fear concentrates minds ....

This is indeed a really big story as Gavin Esler remarked at the close of Thursday's edition as he went through Friday front pages.
I especially would like to hear from representatives of each party what their position is.
We could perhaps have the hedge fund manager on the other night with Kirsty who was rather intense on a possible banking crisis consequent of the Eurozone crisis and in particular I would like to know how a hedge fund would attempt to profit from markets in turmoil as a result of this crisis, what the ethics of that is and how or otherwise hedge funds will be constrained by the regulations proposed.
Alternatively someone from Barclays Capital (who were heavily implicated in the hysterical trading on the Dow on election day Thursday) might also be interesting.

Hopefully they are waiting for sentencing before exploring how close they were to mass murder and why there have been so many far right extremists who generally have received tolerant sentences.
Personally I can't see other far right head bangers being inspired by such mindless evil.
In fairness Lewington, the ex-BNP member, got a fair sentence for carrying his explosive tennis balls about and having a bomb factory.
I would hope the the new Home Secretary is going to ensure resource is available domestically and I wonder what will become of the old Prevent strategy that latterly included the far right but apparently alienated many Muslims.

he will be coached *thoroughly* by his Tory masters on why "cuts are necessary", and why "privatisations are necessary", and thrown out to the lions in the media-circus. I *really* feel sorry for him, this is not a good reward for the work he did in exposing the lies and corruption amongst the Banksters. Now he will be their spokesman, and he will be fully expected to suck it until he chokes. He would have made a far better business secretary in a rainbow coalition - or else he should remain as a back-bencher, fighting the economic fight on behalf of the Public, and Truth.
as for how they will "work together" - watch how he changes as he goes through 'intensive reprogramming' by the Tories and the Treasury. It may take a small while, especially now it has been mentioned, but you will see the "People's Chancellor" becoming the "Spokesman for Privatisation", step by step. There will be no working together - he WILL DO what he is TOLD TO DO.
as for this "laws" person, can anybody tell me why he isn't in fact a Tory? What actual differences does he have with them economically? Lets be serious about this - he is in reality, just like Clegg, a Tory in the 'wrong' Party.
the Liberals "moderating" the Tories?? Dream on. ALL that has changed is that Public attention can now be diverted from things they SHOULD be being told about, by irrelevant arguments deliberately started between the 'parties' in our Coalition Dictatorship.
it may all be new to our media, but many in the new coalition have ample experience with working within cross-party coalitions (such as in the EU) - and the possibilities the present to hoodwink the public, and the few remnants of a critical media we have left.
if we had an election tomorrow, i doubt we would see more than 30% of the electorate even bother to turn out, and already even only the few LibDems who have ANY credibility left (sarah teather for instance) would have the smallest chance of re-election. We are in early days yet, and it is extraordinary that the first thing this new Govt does is to change the Constitution to keep itself in power regardless of the wishes of either the Electorate, or even Parliament Itself! It is also extraordinary to see the LibDem poodle bouncing upon the lap of the Tory Pit-Bull, dropping its desire for PR in exchange for an electoral pact that will see its ultimate doom as an electoral force.
this has been a stitch-up from beginning to end, and whilst the fascist press are understandably 'over the moon' about the result, and busy promoting the idea that "the Public voted for this", and "we should give them time" - well, they would, wouldn't they?

no wonder Clegg and his new buddies are worried the LibDems might jump ship early on, and 'need' to prevent their removal from office by changing our Constitution - how long did they expect to be able to hoodwink the pretty-darn-clever ACTUAL Liberals in the Cabinet? Presumably long enough to force this Constitutional change through Parliament, that keeps the Tories in power even if the LibDems wash their hands of them.

Look around and you’ll find the answer is staring you in the face!
To start with, we obviously need many of them as interpreters; to fill the jobs, panels and focus groups that ‘community integration’ has imposed; and many more jobs in health, education, police, social services and other public services due to the increased population and workload resulting from - uncontrolled immigration.
Brown boasted of the ‘new’ jobs his government created, later revealed to be almost all in the public sector (taxpayer burden) with 80% of them established as going to immigrants.
As the TaxPayers’ Alliance observed: ‘many council translators end up dealing with people who have lived here for years without learning English. It’s ridiculous that people are claiming benefits for years but can’t even fill in a form about themselves in our national language.’
And a spokesman for Milton Keynes council said the centre was ‘cost neutral’ because it charges some customers – and other costs are billed to different public services such as the NHS.” If their wagebill (for 300 interpreters) is known as ‘cost neutral’ because it is ‘hidden’ in other public service costs then it is no wonder that we can never get the true facts on the ‘financial benefit’ from immigration.

firstly, there is so much focus upon the word "equality", because so many of our political class wish to hide the simple fact that they are doing everything they can to *reduce* equality - whilst claiming the opposite.
the problem with the drugs on the NHS was that it is intended to be a comprehensive service - to break that absolute principle, to allow individuals to "top-up" their service, was DEFINITIVELY prevented at the formation of the NHS, as it would allow the NHS to be reduced to a band-aid for the poor, and the rich getting *everything*. Before the NHS, only the rich could afford doctors and nurses, you may dislike "equality", but do you not agree that *EVERY* Briton has the right to decent treatment??
--and if not, why not?
the same principle stands for education - why should kids from a poorer background get poorer education, when THEY are the ones who could benefit most? The problem with English State education is NOT 'equality', although it is true that some interpret this wrongly as "equality of result", which is not what education is about in any rational sense, it is because it has been deliberately designed to be intolerable for most children from non-academic family backgrounds. Yes, *deliberately* designed. Students learn more when they are enjoying the lessons, and are motivated to learn. NOT when they are forced through constant, irrelevant testing, and under constant electronic surveillance. And with 35+ pupils to a class.
a bit more "equality" would NOT go amiss in the educational system, but as i said, i totally agree with you that aiming for "equality of result" is a stupid, Marxist, High-Modernist inspired lunacy.
as for the ministers - would you put G W Bush in charge of West-Islam International Peace Accords? People who have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what poverty is like, who have only benefited from the high wealth inequality in the UK, who only care about cutting taxes upon themselves and their friends (remember the inheritance tax move?) - are THESE the best people to sort out the wealth gap, and force the wealthy to invest again in the country to rebuild it, cutting poverty and unemployment? Or do you imagine they would prefer to continue the 'debt upon debt' model?
do you not think there is VERY good reason why the multi-£Bnaire Rupert Murdoch supported the Tories into power?

as for the tax - the solution seems pretty darn simple. Make *EVERYONE* pay a "fair" amount of tax! Those immigrants by and large are working and paying a high share of tax, *they* cannot afford professional accountants, and in the main (as i was in Denmark) they are HAPPY to pay the taxes because they ENJOY living in the UK.

the wealthy are not just expecting not to pay for immigrants - they are also refusing to pay for ANYTHING! As i said to you in yesterday's web-page, an objective view can only come to one conclusion - it is not *immigrants* that are the 'problem' (they work and pay taxes if they are able to), it is the WEALTHY.

btw, just imagine the consequences for the World's economic systems if Iranian oil is removed from the market? Think China would be happy with that?
what do you think the oil price will do? And what kind of profits do you thing the US oil companies will pocket?
and what will that do to eg food production around the World?
the UK is to be prevented from moving to a post-oil permaculture model (as argued passionately by the Greens) - how many people do you imagine the UK's current oil-thirsty agribusiness could support if the oil flow was cut off dramatically?
try not to think about it, everything is cool, we have a Coalition Dictatorship now, moaning is sour grapes, and everything is in "The National Interest". Go back to sleep people, all is well.
all is well.
--isn't it odd that so many people still think the Trilateral Commission and the Bilderbergers are just fantasies of paranoiacs? Even though the Bilderbergers have been raised in at least ONE Parliamentary Question? (by the MP for Lewis, E. Sussex - Norman Baker).
do people REALLY think this 'banking crisis' was 'accidental', caused by 'market forces'? "Lax regulations led the Market to behave erratically" LOL.
nope, no human intervention or planning, no sirREEE!!!
there you go mim, evidence of paranoia, just for you. Early CHRISTmas present! xxx

It is here that the great conflict will occur - America, Russia...the time is not far off....The Lady [vision of the Virgin Mary] extended her hands in a protective gesture over a region that seemed to me to be the Ukraine. And I saw an infernal fire raging above, to the left of me in Russia. It appeared to me to be the result of a great explosion that erupted from the earth. The lady said: “And so you see, nothing remains." And looked upon what was virtually a deserted plain.

who needs that when Home Democracy is stifled, and the wars are intended to cause catastrophe in the region? Or - 9/11 was NOT a 'false flag' operation, and our troops are there to "prevent terrorism in the West". Presumably our Great Leaders saw this future, which is why they have sent our armies to Afghanistan so many times in the last 200 years... sure.

Or else through the courts, taking many years. Also, it should be quite obvious that with Peak Oil passed, the notion of building MORE runways when flying is about to become expensive again is just ludicrous. An easy pledge to make.
as for ID cards - its all yet again a smoke screen. The CORE element of ID cards is a central database, tied into the new biometric passports. THAT is still going ahead, which means all the Govt has to do is pass a requirement for ID cards in the future. It may be in this Parliament, it may be in the next. The ONLY way to ensure its prevention is to scrap that database. How many of those Civil-Liberty-preaching MPs are arguing for the database to be scrapped?
how many times have you heard Cameron and Clegg even MENTION it??
-exactly. I would have thought YOU were cynical enough about politicians and "good intentions" to have looked deeper. Personally, i would say that is more important than speed restrictions?
"When the shine wears off the climate scam Cameron can pin the full blame for any money wasted on eco lunacy firmly on the Lib-Demmics."
lol, from a slightly different perspective on that, i tend to agree. :)
#80: barry, i was pondering just that this afternoon. The thought i was pondering was - WHEN did the UK Political System get turned into an X-Factor competition?
look at the millibands/clegg/camoron - do ANY of them have the gravitas you would expect from a PRIME MINISTER!?!
they all look like hopefuls, all smiles, energy, and fake optimism. I am reminded of the last Xmas's number 1 'competition' - and i also find myself wondering which way all those who chose Rage's single instead of the x-factor bland corporate crap, voted in the General Election?
the memory of those twits saying they chose the x-factor because "He is sweet, cute, and deserves to win", as opposed to any actual creative musical talent, explains a great deal about the last election when you think about it.

#28: regarding fixed-term parliaments, so have i. Giving the PM the ability to dissolve Parliament whenever they wished was always a somewhat thorny aspect of UK Politics.
BUT!!!! Enforcing a fixed term Govt, ALONG WITH removing the ability for Parliament to remove the executive on a majority vote (which forces the Govt to turn back to the People for their votes), WITHOUT putting in extra Constitutional safeguards against Tyranny (such ...PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION!!!), is absolutely INSANE.
LORD Heseltine said it himself last night - these changes are NOT to improve British Democracy, they are PURELY AND ONLY intended to keep a Conservative Govt in power in the face of enormous Public and Parliamentary opposition! That is the ONLY reason according to him!!
ANY Govt that is truly sincere about "strong and stable Govt" MUST build coalitions amongst many groups within society, it MUST get its way only through reasoned discussion, and it MUST be ready to admit when proposals are shown to be flawed. To change the Constitution to PREVENT opposition, to allow them to IGNORE other opinions, and to maintain their grip on Power when all else in the country (barring Banksters) are screaming for them to go - this is a Govt that has Tyranny as its objective, a Dictatorship that cannot be removed by fair means - and more than willing to use foul means to keep itself in Power.
fixed terms yes - but fixed terms tempered by other arrangements to increase the ability for actors *other* than the PM to dissolve Parliament, a bigger yes.
and NO WAY should fixed terms be used as a shockingly cynical attempt to maintain a deeply unpopular, tyrannous Dictatorship in power.
in my, very very humble, opinion. :/

Then, there is Jacques Brel's song 'Ne me quittes-pas', i.e. '/Please/ Don't Leave Me' but this is only a metaphor. And he also sings about never resorting to brute force when trying to reach his 'star'. No wonder he had quite a few female fans, from what I know.

Before coming to this country I used to listen to the classical radio station where occasionally they played music from around the world, mainly so called author songs/ballads. One day I heard a Russian song, it may have been Zhanna Bichewskaya, I'm not sure, but the sound of the language and the soulful portrayal of whatever the singer was singing about, moved me so much I thought I might one day pursue the study of the language which we were forced to do at school.
Then I worked in a Bistro in Putney. One day, when I was working as a waitress, I overheard a Polish girl talking to a friend of hers about her having already enrolled on the course at SSEES. Being completely unaware of the fact that I might have already had enough qualifications and the right to study in the UK, I asked her for details and in the end followed her steps. Little did I know at the time, I was enrolling for an entry to future Hell.

Nick Cohen later made a verty relevant comment I think when he remarked that never before had a capitalist boom and bust been presided over by a Labour government and as Osborne and Cable now dismantle the banks too big to fail as they must (as recommended for example by Mervyn King) there's not much that Labour can do to stamp its own political identity on the process.
But dismantling banks to big to fail is a done deal. The banks cannot cry foul and say they weren't responsible because plainly they were and in any case they had to be rescued by government and in a couple of cases are still essentially owned by government.
But this sense of guilt and culpability is not one shared by the hedge funds. Although deeply unpopular and unquestionably implicated in the financial crisis as well quite plainly the moving force in the current market turmoil surrounding the Euro they insist essentially that they do no more than oil the machinery of the markets, even that they are a benign force for the good. Remarkably they have mostly survived the financial crisis and have emerged stronger. We grow daily more accustomed to events like election day Thursday when the Dow briefly fell by more than a thousand points on the back of hedging trades initiated in Kansas and executed in London a few hours before our polls closed for the accounts of clients of a hedge fund whose identities we will never know.
Our new masters of the universe are no longer bankers but hedge fund managers (with egos to match judged by the performance of the one on with Kirsty the other week) and on the evidence of election Thursday perhaps not for long them either but rather computer trading algorithms and ultimately the machines executing them themselves.
What we do about regulating global speculation in the financial markets seems to me to be an issue which should divide the political parties and serve to differentiate them and I do hope Newsnight will keep the issue on its radar screen.

Westminster's answer (any party) is always that the electorate are just nit pickers, who don't realise how well it is all going. Let's have a look at that assertion:
We are at war on a dodgy prospectus. Social cohesion is declining. Obscene wealth is rampant. Emotional/psychological health is declining. Scams are the norm in trading and banking. Media promote degradation, bullying, casual sex and casual violence. Mothering is labelled menial.
'Celebrity' is disproportionately lauded. Governance itself - both UK and EU - is CORRUPT.
In short: Westminster governance isn't working. If Westminster knew how to govern, we would be a very different country by now. But we elevate devious gottabes, and reap a continuous whirlwind.
Labour are out of office due to 'all of the above'. Dave will go the same way.
