Eight stunning pictures of October's harvest moon

Chris Hitchings

BBC Springwatch Digital Team

The first full moon after the Autumn equinox is known as the Harvest Moon. In days-gone-by it signalled to farmers that it's the time of year to harvest their crops. With bright white moon shining high in the sky, the extra light would extend the amount of time farmers could work on the crops in their fields.

The moon put on a fantastic display for this year's harvest moon, and you've been sending in your photos.

1) Caroline Hooper captured this stunning shot in Gloucestershire as the sun set

2) Samantha Nandi said "no filter" was needed to capture this shot, again from Gloucestershire

3) Phillip Simpkin captured this shot at 9.30pm in Leicester, stunning!

4) Tony Hicks captured the harvest moon from Portsmouth, Hampshire

5) Thanks to Keith Griffiths for this amazing shot of the moon lighting up Wellingborough, Northamptonshire

6) Mark Mowbray captured this very clear shot and submitted it via our Flickr page

7) Plane beautiful, captured by Joe Reid

8) Tom Reed captured this shimmering shot of it over his local beach

With thanks to the Autumnwatch viewers we sent these images in through our Facebook, Twitter and Flickr pages.
