I agree with you about Peggy Sue Got Married - great film. But you didn't like Hot Tub Time Machine? Ok so it's not Back to the Future and I think its crassness overwhelmed some but I loved the razor-sharp dialogue and the terrific ensemble cast. Underrated really.

Unfortunately, seeing as the naughties and early 2010's are all about the 80s, we've already had THAT nostalgic movie for the 80s which blows away all other competition. That movie is "Adventureland", and already all nostalgic 80s movies are beginning to look stale in its wake.
In a way it's hard to explain, because we seems to look back for our nostalgia 20-30 years. So something like "The Wackness", about the 90s just came too early for anyone to care, while it's an okay film with a good soundtrack. The writer-director of "The Wackness" should have held on to the script for another ten years, perhaps it would have been better appreciated. Anyway, I digress. Something like "Cemetery Junction" just came too late, as the 70s nostalgia has vanished from public consensus.
While I haven't seen "Take Me Home Tonight" yet, I'm starting to feel as if the 80s peaked with "Adventureland". For me, that was the 80s "Dazed and Confused" or "American Graffiti". Although I will go see this movie, and keep an open mind. Also, this is just my own opinion I've got into arguments with friends who hated "Adventureland", so who knows.

Just come back from seeing Take Me Home Tonight. Not very good at all. A few laughs, but the lead male was as wooden as... a wooden thing.

I'll rewatch my 80s favourite teen/high school/ college movies, like Peggy Sue Got Married, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Dazed and Confused, The Breakfast Club, Animal House, et al and reminisce with far better examples of this genre.
I didn't mind Hot Tub Time Machine. Had a few giggles, but was a bit disappointed there weren't more.
