A couple of blogs on a couple of movie institutions (Richard Gere and Emma Thompson) elicited a world of comment on the nature of thespian credentials, and for these many insights and observations I thank you and here humbly respond.

Thanks for the mention Dr. K, but the user name is really just two references - to the David O. Russell film 'Spanking The Monkey' (a vastly underrated black comedy) and the Japanese martial arts actor Sonny Chiba.

I'll consider myself chastised (for now). Does this also mean you don't think there are any sexual innuendo's in Captain Pugwash?

    Ooo err missus!

I never expected to find myself watching Nanny McPhee (come on, a single man of 38 who didn't even really like Mary Poppins?), but after your raves the other day, I saw a £3 copy in a certain supermarket and thought I'd give it a try. It's ace. Thanks. It made my weekend. Not sure I can face seeing the sequel in a cinema filled with kids, though.

I recently rented Exorcist II: The Heretic (which is a misnomer; its predecessor is entitled THE Exorcist) from PlayStation Store to finally see if the Doc's opinion of it is accurate...

Well, it is! No scares to speak of whatsoever, and strangely, not one mention of Father Damien Karras - the ultimate saviour of Regan MacNeil in the original. Odd.

Its only good points were - pardon the pun - Kitty Winn's (Sharon) partially-visible-through-sodden-gown nipples! Speaking of Sharon, am I right in inferring that the film implies the Ouija board "played with" by Regan in the original was actually hers?

I also purchase Nanny McPhee from a place that sounds like "wesko" for £3 and low and behold by the end I've a five year old daughter asking me what incest is!

    Niiiiice.

    She did enjoy it though.

Off topic I know but where's the love for Kick Ass?

Exorcist II has been on sale for £3 at HMV for years, and I still can't bring myself to buy it, even though I own a lot of trashy horror movies. I don't even own the two Exorcist IV movies, as they total rubbish.

So in my franchise horror collection I have The Exorcist, The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen, The Ninth Configuration, and Exorcist III.

Fingers cross for a Legion: Exorcist III: The Version You've Never Seen to come out on dvd soon.

I think an analysis of Al Pacino's acting will be something we would all like to hear.

He has been accused of overacting or basically playing the same guy.

Your opinion Dr.K would be appreciated.

    @ defeis:

Dr. K has already done that to an extent, in his review of Two for the Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvZS4PzxdnE

You are so wrong Mark. The worst movie ever made is obviously "North" (1994) by Rob Reiner. Bad action, sc-fi, and horror films (like Exorcist II: The Heretic) that takes themselves so seriously tends to be unintentionally funny and at least makes you laugh, so you get something out of watching them ("so bad it's good.") And you walk out of the cinema, mocking the whole thing and wondering why in the world Ben Kingsley was in it.

However, this is not the case with comedies that fails at what they intend to do: make you laugh. You sit through an unfunny comedy, completely unmoved by what's going on like somebody just died, asking "What's the joke? That's not funny." And you walk out out the cinema, just feeling depressed, grumpy, and mad at the two-hours of nothing you sat through and wondering how Rob Schneider keeps getting work. A bad comedy is nothing but vacuum. There is nothing worse than a bad comedy, and North is most certainly the worst; a contrived family comedy with adult content, racial insensitivity, and references to pedophilia, that ends with the main character waking up, revealing that everything the audience sat through was all just a dream. Oh and Bruce Willis turns up now and then as the Easter Bunny. North is the worst movie ever made.

    thanks mate

Filip- And of course it's the film about which Roger Ebert said "I hated this movie. Hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it.

Funnily, I'd say all of that about Transformers 2.

    9. No, the worst film ever is, of course, Mac and Me. Word fail, they really do...try this instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5le9sYdYkM

On the subject of worst film ever have you seen the trailer for "Birdemeic: Shock and Terror" It's on the website of the paper you read:

    https://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/apr/07/birdemic-horror-film-cult

They report it as a genuine attempt at a horror movie but for that to be true the guy who made has to be as delusional as an early round x-factor contestant.

  • Comment number 14.

"Funnily, I'd say all of that about Transformers 2."

Heh, to summarize Transformers 2 I like to quote Roger Ebert's former partner, Gene Siskel, in his review of Michael Bay's Armageddon: "This could have been the movie that was shown to Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange to make him sick of violence."

  • Comment number 15.

I thought the 'best worst movie' was officially the legendary 'Troll 2' (which famously features no trolls).

Unfortunately I missed it at the Sheffield fest - anyone seen it? Is it as bad as they say? Haven't heard Doctor K mention it anywhere.

What about the Room as the "worst good movie".

Another film to the list is Cobra,it wouldnt take much for that film to be a comedy spoof.

  • Comment number 17.

He may think Exorcist II as the worse movie, but what did he think to Ennio Morricone's soundtrack?

    For example,

Well, according to IMDB (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0449417/bio%29 Mark thinks its "actually pretty terrific."

  • Comment number 19.

15: Good Point! - I've admittedly not seen it but I've seen the (in)famous clip.

Then again, Mac and Me gratuitously features this shameless promo video for a famous american burger chain...

Here's my worst films list (no order):

    * Mac and Me (Words.Fail.)

    * Robin Hood: Men in Tights (Mel Brooks, where did it all go so wrong?)

    * Jeepers Creepers 2 (dreadfully dumb)

    * Moonwalker (well, its not really a film I guess but hey, Joe Pesci is in it!)

    * Caravan Of Courage (the Star Wars TV spin-off - just slightly worse than Phantom Menace)

    * What Dreams May Come (Robin Williams. On the verge of tears. For.Two.Long.Hours)

    * Tom & Jerry: The Movie (Tom & Jerry were NEVER friends!)

    * Blood: The Last Vampire (Archie Mitchell with an American accent?)

    * Melinda & Melinda (put me off Woody Allen for life)

    * Police Academy 6 (watched it on a plane - am suprised we didn't crash)
