Frankly, I have lost faith in the Academy since the year Marty lost Best Director to Costner 1991, and they have failed to win me back when they awarded Best Actor to Denzel instead of either Russell Crowe or Sean Penn 2002, and once again when they failed to award Mickey Rourke 2009. To me, its all about politics and commercials nowadays.



However, I have a gut feeling Sam Rockwell will not get a nod for Best Actor, never mind winning it! And if he doesn't get nominated, then I shan't bother myself about the Oscars till the day I die!

Somewhat better than the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man, which I saw the day after it, Haneke's film is, in my opinion, both historical and historic; historical in the sense that it perfectly exemplifies the way in which we can look back on the past and discover new things about it, whilst simultaneously allowing that past to act as a mirror to our present; historic in the sense that it is a landmark both in the extended project of soul-searching within the German national psyche and in cinema's depiction of our relationship with children.



The central subject of the film is, i think, not the obvious one of repression - emotional, sexual, etc. - it's actually more about children. Children were treated more harshly in the 1910s than they are now - of that there is no doubt; what is also the case, however, is that we have become increasingly afraid of them since then. The horror genre's increasing fascination with evil children is cinematic evidence of this, but the children in The White Ribbon are, in a quiet, odd way, absolutely terrifying; crucially, they never actually do anything (on screen, at least) to particularly justify our suspicion of them; this arguably lays bare, in a more powerful way than any horror movie ever could, the power of paedophobia today.



The many ways in which the events of the film mirror, distort, depend upon and exploit contemporary fears about children, while simultaneously functioning as a penetrating exploration of the pre-WWI German psyche, mark it out as a truly great film. What takes it even further, though, is the visual, conversational and aural austerity of the film, which wonderfully contrasts with the rich depth of psychological intensity felt in practically every scene, and therefore the heavy dramatic power of even the smallest piece of dialogue or facial expression.



The White Ribbon is a film saturated in psychological power, with some potentially interesting political and historical implications; its unflinching intensity made it one of the most mentally tiring films I've ever seen, but I came out of it feeling nourished at the same time. I usually go straight into discussing the film I've just seen with the people who saw it with me; in this case, we exited the cinema and lingered for a while in a contented silence.

One the most intense,emotional 111 mins i have spent in a cinema. Truly briiliant.



Best Film: Up in the air OR The Hangover ( I know the good doctor didn't think too highly of it but I think it was one of the funniest sleeper comedies in ages and made laugh lots even though it was puerile in parts I still think it deserves something)

I haven't seen enough films this year to have a go at all categories but I think Christoph Waltz should be nominated for Best Actor.

Sure he'll get nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as he has been at the BAFTAs and the Globes, but, as he has no smaller part than any of the other actors in Inglorious Basterds and was simply fantastic, he should win the Kermode award (and in my opinion the Oscar) for Best Actor in a Leading Role.



Saw the film yesterday, went in with low expectations and was proved right.

Film is flimsy, superficial, rushed yet too long, Brad Pitt is the worst I've seen him and the only redeeming feature is Christoph Waltz's glorious performance.



"Au revoir, Shoshana!"

Best Supporting Cast Special Mention - The children in The White Ribbon. There are too many of them to focus on one, but they are all amazing.



The White Ribbon certainly deserves recognition as a masterpiece but sadly it wasn't quite as good as the classic A Serious Man, which is destined to be appreciated more and more with each passing year, nor the enchanting Let The Right One In.

Best director should go to Nuri Bilge Ceylan for the extraordinary Three Monkeys. Though I very much doubt it will as I have never heard Mark Kermode make any mention of his name.

Best Director - Duncan Jones. If someone had said to me that Zowie Bowie would make the best film of the year last January I would have laughed in their face. Stunning vision for any director let alone a first time one.



Best Actor - I think Viggo Mortensen has an outside chance of getting a nod so I'm going to go for Kodi Smit-McPhee as he was equally impressive as Mortensen and I really don’t think it can be considered a supporting role, he probably has more screen time than Mortensen. He also manages to avoid what I like to call 'Dakota Fanning Syndrome', which is acting far too mature for a child and instead actually acts like a child would in such an extraordinary situation.



Best Actress - Maya Rudolph. Brilliant performance in the underrated Away We Go, which is both sensitive and subtle. It could have easily been a very irritating character but her measured performance is why the film works.



Best Supporting Actor - Tom Felton. He actually gets to show his acting ability in the sixth Potter film and his performance captures the internal conflict of that character perfectly. A welcome surprise.



Best Supporting Actress - Diane Kruger for both Inglourious Basterds and Anything For Her. Two very different performances but both show what a capable actress she is. She handles the portrayal of grief in Anything For Her so convincingly that I don't think the film would have been anything special without her. She was also great to watch in Inglourious Basterds and more than holds her own alongside Michael Fassbender.



Best Score - I can't decide between Nick Cave and Warren Ellis for The Road or Clint Mansell for Moon. Both brilliant but I think Mansell just edges it as the score for The Road is slightly too similar to The Assassination of Jesse James. Although perhaps you should give them the award, Dr. Kermode, for overlooking their score for Jesse James, which is the best score in the last 10 years.

What a wonderful film. Utterly devoid of over-direction and pretention, and held together by two performances that I can only describe as horrifyingly convincing. Jessica Haines in particular is impossibly credible as Lucy, given the kind of decisions and compromises her character is forced to make. And Malkovich, too, is superbly nuanced as a character who starts out barely human and ends the film as something approaching a man. It's rare to find a film that requires its characters to undergo such fundamental changes and alterations during the course of its plot; and rarer still for two actors to make you believe in them. And it pulls off the equally impossible feat of providing profound social commentary without ever allowing allegory or "bigger issues" to impinge on the intimacy of its human drama.



I've been reading the blog and listening to the radio show fairly assiduously since Disgrace came out but I don't think you've yet discussed or reviewed this film, Mark. If that's the case, why? And how is it that a film dripping in talent and the requisite level of 'worthiness' has maintained such a low profile in the awards season?

The only one here that might get a nomination at the oscars is Tarantino but he definitely won't be nominated for the Kermodes so I thought I'd slip him in. If I could include Oscar nominated films I'd probably only swap Christoph Waltz for Gandolfini. I haven't seen Port of Call, The Prophet, Moon, or Hunger so judge accordingly. If Nick Cage's performance in The Bad Lieutenant is anywhere close to The Wicker Man I'd have to put him up for best actor.



Suggestion: Dr. K, have you considered a special best of the decade Kermode award show?

Films that first come to my mind impressing me are 'Let the Right One In', 'A Serious Man' and 'Where the Wild Things Are'. So it would have to be one of those for Kermode award for best flick. Quite funny In the week of Christmas I saw (on Monday) 'Avatar', which I thought was flawed in the ways you mentioned (death to 3D...among others) but one of the best films of the year (yet not in the Cameron top 3), then on Christmas Eve I saw 'Where the Wild Things Are', again for me one of the best films of the year (but for different reasons obviously -- to my mind the clearest and all round greatest clandestine film ever made). It's a shame I had to see in between that...'Alvin and the Chipminks 2: The Squeakquel', undoubtedly one of the worst films of the year.

I definitely think that Peter Capaldi should be recognised with an acting award. He may get a BAFTA nomination but i doubt he would at the Oscars

I would nominate Moon for best film and Johnny Depp for best actor because without him Public Enemies wouldn't have been even a half way decent film. Best actor could also go to Sam Rockwell for a brilliant performance in Moon.

JENNIFER'S BODY



Because everyone either hated it or ignored it, and I think that's a shame. Apart from being a great funny / sexy / scary b-movie, it was a clever little fable about patriarchy and the way you deal with it. That Diablo Cody knows what she is doing, people...



Maybe give her original screenplay? Or give Amanda Seyfried the supporting actress award? Either way, it would be really great to see it get a mention.



The only other film of last year I loved unreservedly was In The Loop. I thought Let The Right One In and District 9 were good, but flawed. (Avatar VERY flawed. Come on guys...)

I know you didn't even ask for this category, but I want to say that for me the single most impressive element of the best film I saw all year is the cinematography of Let The Right One In. The long distance shot of the bridge during Eli's first attack, The passing train seem from inside the school hall windows, Oskar's hand print on the glass, the symmetrical placement of their two bedroom windows looking like a Mark Rothko painting, the snow falling, the frost on the trees glinting in the sun... just heartbreakingly beautiful from end to end.

I am glad that Lina Leandersson has received so many nods. I agree, she was definitely also my favourite actress in 2009, but that is no excuse for overlooking Kåre Hedebrant as best actor.



If you watch those two amazing performances closely, the one from Hedebrant is actually even better than the one from Leandersson, mainly because he is able to inject that amazing twisted sense of humour that is so great about the best of Swedish films. In a lot of ways, Hedebrant carried the film, I'm pretty sure he had a lot more screen time than his co-star.



I'm afraid that I fear that Leandersson is receiving so much more praise than Hedebrant partly because her looks are so striking.

I have seen fewer films this last year than ever, so I find myself only able to nominate a short film which I saw at the London Film Festival. I nominate "Jubilee" (written and directed by Doug Rao), for both its quality and the potential of its writer and director.

Honestly, you're probably right that Leandersson's role is more of a lead role. I guess that I just see Oskar as the focal point of the film and therefore label the other roles as supporting to that performance; it has nothing to do with her age. Supporting or not, let's just call it a fantastic performance.

I don't think anyone who has seen Let the Right One In is overlooking Hedebrant's performance. He is clearly on par with Leandersson and the two really carry the film. I would bet that most of the people who enjoyed Let the Right One In would include him in there nominations for best actor. There have simply been some other great male leads this year. I think it's easily the strongest category of 2009.

I think you should have a life time achievement award, NOT for just being in the film making business since the dawn of time, but for having an excellent body of work, that each film is excellent in it's own right, rather than a mix bag of movies, where some are good, but some are real bad, but a faultless line of masterpieces/good movies.

Best Film- Moon or A Serious Man

Moon I simply enjoyed more thoroughly than any other film this year. A Serious Man might be the first Coen bros film actually about something other than their cleverness at making films.



Best Director- Duncan Jones (Moon)

A really solid debut. With the references to the likes of 2001 and Silent Running could have easily slipped into pastiche, which it never does. I think Kathryn Bigelow ought to get the big awards, well deserved, and also to get one up on her ex and his pretty blue people. Also Terry Gilliam, even when he puts out an uneven film, it's a joy to behold.



Best Actor- Sam Rockwell (Moon)

I think this may be the most underappreciated dual role since Jeremy Irons in Dead Ringers. Andy Serkis (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) and Michael Sheen (The Damned United) are close favorites. Also agree with those who've mentioned Stephen McHattie's lynchpin performance in Pontypool. Matt Damon (The Informant!) and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man) were similarly essential in their respective films.



Best Actress- Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist)

Whatever else you come away with from the film, a blistering performance, it's almost too much too bear. Close in the trauma stakes: Melissa George (Triangle).



Best Supporting Actor- Bill Milner (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll)

Serkis performance would have overpowered everyone else in the movie (much as Dury seemed to), but for the relationships portrayed excellently with his son. Olivia Williams and Naomie Harris also deserve praise within this ensemble.

Also Tom Waits (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassas), I could have done with more of him and Christopher Plummer and their feud in the past than the Heath and his regrettable understudies bits.



Best Supporting Actress- Anne Marie Duffy and Kristin Scott Thomas (Nowhere Boy) and only if they can share it. OR

Olivia Williams and Naomie Harris (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) with the same proviso OR

Meryl Streep (The Fantastic Mr Fox) her dead on performance grounded the quirkaholic Wes Andersons film on the enjoyable end of the spectrum.

Also, Milla Jovovich (A Perfect Getaway) -- perfect B movie acting, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland) another dual nomination, Kristen Stewart (Adventureland) maybe it takes a particularly good performance to make Jesse Eisenberg credible, Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days of Summer) don't quite understand why Mark slammed this cineliterate update on Chilly Scenes of Winter, he clearly dislikes certain American female inflections and the actresses who possess them.

Most Disappointing Movies: Public Enemies and Inglorious Basterds

I know Mark didn't ask for this, but I saw these films with lowered expectations, which neither managed to rise to. Public Enemies unforgivably ugly videography from a director and cinematographer who should know better, and boring. Inglorious Basterds, too few good bits surrounded with boredom and pointless grandstanding, I hope its success doesn't prompt more of the same from QT. I was slightly disappointed by the excellent The Damned United, but only because it wasn't a zombie film.

Best Supporting Actress: Megan fox for having the decency to only show up in two films this year that there was no chance in hell I was ever going to watch, thus saving me the agony of her ridiculous 'pouty stretchy' performance (a word I use loosely).

Also forgot to mention that TOM WAITS was in TWO films this year! Can we please see the Kermode award 'Best Film to feature Tom Waits'

Best Score: The version of Fight the Power by the singing cats in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

I'd feel gratified if The White Ribbon received some special mention, particularly Leonard Proxauf's supporting performance as Martin. I guess the film has already won the Palme d'or though, so for me it's the second most haunting film of the year, A Serious Man.



Clint Mansell's score for Moon was very effective, don't know if it'll be recognised elsewhere. Bruno Coulais for Coraline was also excellent.



Genuinely, Alison Lohman deserves every award going for Drag Me to Hell. You could even give her best score, she'd still deserve it. Some reviewers were quite sniffy about her performance, as well as the film itself, so it would be a real righting of wrongs if she were recognised.



Clint Eastwood for best director might just be a sentimental vote, but he earns a Giggles award if nothing else.



Vincent Cassell carried two films with one performance, and finally lay the ghost of Guest House Paradiso to rest.



Patricia Clarkson's support turn in Whatever Works made that more watchable than it otherwise would have been, but Esmerelda Ouertani in The Class was a standout.

'Let the Right One In' not being nominated isn't the fault of the Academy but is due to the Swedish Film Institute not selecting it as their official selection last year when it was due to be eligible. When it's eligibility status changed so that it could be included in this years selection the Swedish Film Institute refused to include it as it had already been considered for last years nominations and they never allow films to be considered twice. Having said all that the Academy are somewhat to blame for their silly rules especially in the foreign Language section.



If Avatar gets the same nominations in the Academy Awards as it has in the Golden Globes and BAFTAs then I will be convinced that awards are simply bought.

Why has Mark kermode never mentioned anything about Director Nuri bilge Ceylan? Ceylan has recieved high praise for Uzak, Climates and Three Monkeys. I'm guessing you have ignored these films because you despise them. Not your type of film? That's fine, but can you tell us why? Maybe you couldn't find anything interesting in them and simply forgot them? That name again "NURI BILGE CEYLAN".

Hearing and reading your review, Mark, I seem to agree with you on almost every remark except the final conclusion. To me the good does not by far outweigh the bad. I am still baffled. What is it that makes Avatar such a succes? I have to wonder whether I did indeed see the same film as the rest of the world. Do special effects still substitute for story? I thought we were getting past that.

Bobbox, this is a fair point. I conceede. It is a stellar performance though isn't it? Top notch.
