The baseball scene in Twilight was a very refreshing idea, showing vampires protecting a human from other vampires! The director was very on the ball and she does know how to do great teen angst films: Lords of Dogtown and 13 etc.
I'm not sure that New Moon has a director who is as able with this kind of material, however like the Potter movies perhaps the brand is now so well established that money will roll in and it's quite a hard thing to break so long as you remain true to the key elements behind the story.
The fact that the third movie is already in post-production shows how much faith the studios have in the brand and things could be a lot worse... COUGH! Transformers... COUGH! Spiderman etc etc

I can also accept the fact that characters are unrealistic and rather flat (Bella has no interests, plans for future, and it seems that the only thing on Earth that can make her happy is a boy, or rather THE boy). I’m quite happy with muscular boys running through the forest in cut-of shorts. What I cannot accept is how terribly boring this movie is. I don’t know how anybody can defend it.
Oh, and the way Robert Pattinson talks… it just annoys me.

Have to say I thought it a teen movie when it came out (and I'm not a fan of the H. Potter movies either, thought I have read several of the books - they're OK'ish.) Hope I'm pleasantly surprised.
Just watched the Delux, 2 movie, edition of 'Red Cliff'.
Very pleasantly impressed; you wouldn't immediately guess it was a John Woo movie (not much slo-mo or [thankfully] wirework) with very impressive battle scenes, the final one particularly.
It's much, much better than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero etc. Plus a lot of focus on character, narrative and historical accuracy in costume, sets and props.
Dare I say it, it bares comparison to some of the best war epics of the past that Hollywood has produced. I include Lean and Kubrick in that.
Best watched over two nights though.

Still the same old misogynist folderol posing as a harmless teen flick.
Here's hoping that the third installment features a cameo by Lili Taylor as seen in Ferrara's "The Addiction".
Then at least we'd have some interesting discourse to pass the time with.
Pattinson: "Your scent, it's like a drug to me. You're like my own personal brand of heroin."
Taylor: "Dependency is a marvelous thing. It does more for the soul than any formulation of doctoral material."
Pattinson: "I hate you for making me want you so much."

I've just seen the worst film of the year and for once I totally disagree with you.
Twilight New Moon is bad, very bad, and yes, it is worst than Bride Wars.
Not only is it badly written, it is badly acted and badly shot (the Wolf CGI???!!!!)
And the whole "stay a Virgin (airlines?) as long as possible-sex before marriage is bad" thing?
SPOILER:
She begs him TO DO IT, but he says: "No, let's wait at least another five years"
she says"No, that's toooo long, let's make it three"
he says "Oh you are such a stubborn girl, then my only condition is: marry me. Then we can DO IT".
Rarely have I seen a female leading character so insignificant, dull and uniteresting.
The only girl who has any charm and beauty at all, the evil red-head Victoria (she is in the only really beautifully shot scene in the woods), is depicted like a witch. She has DONE IT, SHE LIKES DOING IT, therefore she is wicked.Hmmmmm....
All the other (good) vampires (the ones who have DONE IT) feel bad about it and are trying NOT TO DO IT AGAIN.
It seems to me this message appeals very much to fathers of teenagere daughters, who would like their daughters to postpone all that stuff until they are at least 93, but, come on...

Girl falls in love with vampire, vampire falls in love with girl, vampire leaves girl for her own good, girl falls in love with werewolf and werewolf a metaphor for teenage sexuality. Hasn't all this been done a million times before? In fact every single one of those aspects has been in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I want to see these films to form a proper opinion but is this franchise actually adding anything new to the genre?

Also- as the good Dr. pointed out- if you start to look at the whole teen werewolf/vampire thing as metaphor for adolescent boys becoming dangerous as they grow up then there's really more depth to the whole thing than you can usually expect from the average teen film.

Now that everyone knows Stephanie Myer's a Mormon (or whatever) they're desperate to somehow prove that the whole series is just some abstinence tract. What people fail to recognise is that the not-having-sex bit is actually about unfulfilled desires, a theme that has existed in Western Literature pretty much since its inception and actually has nothing to morals or Christianity.

The New Moon comes out Nov. 20th, and there are already New Moon reviews out. The consensus among critics is that the film – you’ll have to pardon the pun – really BITES. (How am I not supposed to make that joke?) Rotten Tomatoes along some of the really big reviewers have decided that the novelty has worn off, and are giving the film a hiding. If you got payday loans for camping gear to wait days for tickets, it might have been a waste.

I also felt, the only female role model for Bella, the partner of the head werewolf seemed to be condoning domestic voilence. She 'Stood too close when he was angry' and yet, like Bella, was too hopelessly in love and now carries the graphic facial scars.

On another note, has anyone read 'Strange Angels' by Lili St Crow? It's kind of in the same vein as New Moon, but i'd say a bit less romantic and more action. Check it out, let me know what you think.

There there are not only fan websites but also the ones where I found information about shooting the film. In my opinion it is very interesting to see how the film was shoot. Perhaps it is because I (rather arrogantly, by my own admission) consider my self a relatively intelligent young person (I don't want to give away my age, for fear of being looked down at but let's just say I'm comfortably within the target group for this film, albeit the male half) I could not watch this film without feeling patronised and a little ill. I would be able to pass this film off a "not really my thing, but whatever" if it wasn't for the rich seam of inherent sexism running through this instalment and indeed the entire franchise. There is a scene in this in which one of the "werewolves" (not actually werewolves of course, but shape shifters, it's a technicality that I have bored many female friends with)is seen with his girlfriend who has a massive scar, inflicted by him, across her face. But it's OK, they're in love. I'm sorry, but that is reprehensible. Also, when Edward leaves Bella, oh what's that? She can't carry on. She is a wreck without a man in her life. Ridiculous.
I respect your opinion, Doc, but I think you may have taken some powerful hallucinogenic substance to enjoy this. Not only is it sexist, but away from all that, it's poorly written, boringly directed, and poorly acted (R-patz and K-stew just do not do it for me).
Rant over. For now.
Much Love,
Aidan DeLarge.
