This week's Memory Tapes was sent to us by James Newey, who writes...

"I made this compilation for a recent road trip around Spain with a friend of mine. We were fortunate enough to be lent a car for the 2000km we covered (I suppose a huge thank you is owed there!), but disappointingly this car did not have the facility to connect an ipod. As I am a little anal about composing compilation tapes, I saw this as a great opportunity to comprise a mix for each of the long journeys we took.

"The list I am sending you was for our first trip from Madrid to Zaragoza and probably my favourite mix of the bunch. It's a fairly diverse selection peppered with many of my favourite tunes at the time. Including a few Shuggie Otis, This Is The Kit and Culture tracks and is a compilation I still listen to occasionally whilst cycling to work.

"The trip itself was brilliant and a real fond memory. Many of the tunes here will live in that happy place and it always brings a smile to my face when I hear some of the below choices."

Here's the tracks...

1. Elegy For Mr Peach - DJ Rupture

2. Elijah - Culture

3. Rockford Rock - Sound Dimension

4. Bionic Dub - Dub Specialists

5. Tramp - Otis Redding

6. Bootie Cooler - Shuggie Otis

7. Babyon`s Big Dog - Culture

8. Gangsters - Specials

9. Boogaloo #3 - Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers

10. Boogaloo 33 - Quantic & Alice Russell

11. Me & My Woman - Shuggie Otis

12. Burning Spear - Breakestra

13. Showbiz Interlude - Breakestra

14. Soul Power 74 - Breakestra

15. You`ve Got The Love - Jamie XX Remix

16. Django Django - Default

17. I Knew - Lightning Dust

18. Humans - Rozi Plain

19. Tangled Walker - This Is The Kit

20. Danse Carribe - Andrew Bird

21. Teary Eyes & Bloody Lips - Moonface

22. Piscine - Francois & The Atlas Mountains

23. Do More Dancing - This Is The Kit

24. Les Fleur - Ramsey Lewis

Please, feel free to send Lauren your Memory Tape...

Your MPFree today comes from Of Montreal. The band are gearing up to release a rarities collection in late October called Daughter Of Cloud.

This particular track that they've chosen to give away comes from a 2006 7-inch which was a stand-alone single between the albums 'The Sunlandic Twins' and 'Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?'

Their last studio album was Paralytic Stalks from February this year.

Your MPFree today comes from The Eccentronic Research Council. Who? They are electronic pop artist Adrian Flanagan, his producer pal Dean Honer and acclaimed actor Maxine Peake.

Their album '1612 Underture' is based around the story of The Pendle Witches and the town of Pendle. This free download is an early verson of a track that eventually made it on to the album.

The band will perform a one off performance of their album this Saturday in a portable 1930s German cabaret venue made of wood called a 'Spiegelent', temporarily erected on Barkers Pool in the centre of Sheffield.

Your Memory Tape this week comes from Robin Mann who's a boy who made a mix for a girl. Classic.

"I made this mix about three years ago now for my then girlfriend Rosie. We split up at the beginning of last year.

"Most of those tracks that feature are still what I listen to these days. I'm a Tom Waits obsessive so Rosie had to feature, and Blue Valentine is my all-time favourite record.

"Also, a few of the other artists (Dalton, Mimms) I came across whilst we were together. I guess they're all tracks that summed me up at the time."

Tracklisting:

I Just Want To Make Love To You - Etta James

The Next Time Around - Little Joy

A Lover Sings - Billy Bragg

Little Bit - Lyke Li

Girls & Boys - Blur

Young Folks - Peter Bjorn & John

Walk On The Wild Side - Lou Reed

Rosie - Tom Waits

How Did The Feeling Feel To You - Karen Dalton

I Looked At You - The Doors

I'd Have It Just The Way We Were - White Denim

Blue Valentines - Tom Waits

Cry Me a River - Dinah Washington

As Long As I Have You - Garnett Mimms

Song To Woody - Bob Dylan

Sinnerman - Nina Simone

Honky Tonk Women - Rolling Stones

Light My Fire - Jose Feliciano

For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield

Cigarettes - Lonnie Duvall

Make me smile - Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel

So far, it's been a week of newbies on the MPFree front, but today's comes from an old fave.... Diplo has teamed up with Jahan Lennon for something pretty unexpected when you consider that the last Diplo track we played was a big brazen bombastic dance track.

This new offering is a psyched-out two and a half minute jam, and is available below.

This week's tracks are:

Turnpike Glow - The Turn, The Pike and The Glow

Helvetia - Nothing In Rambling

Life In Film - Needles & Pins

Blende - Fake Love (Villa Remix)

Diplo - About That Life" (Feat. Jahan Lennon)

Some tracks may no longer be available for download.

The original of this track was released on Monday through Eskimo Recordings, this download however, is the Villa remix.

Your MPFree is another offering of producer and rapper Oddisee; he's clearly very generous with his music as we used his track Paralyzed as an MPFree back in May.

This free download is a new track inspired by his home town Largo in Maryland.

He's playing on Friday at the Jazz Cafe, but unfortunately (not for him) it's sold out.

App know-it-all Stuart Dredge returns to talk you through some of the best bits out this week:

Habu Music

Habu Music is the latest smartphone and tablet app promising to help you discover new, amazing music. Its twist: the music is presented by mood, with playlists based on things like 'sensual', 'peaceful', 'cool' and 'rowdy'.

Indie Shuffle

This is another 'smart playlists' app that aims to serve up new music, but this time based on the popular Indie Shuffle website. Choose a song in genres like indie rock, hip-hop and electronic, hit play, and enjoy (in theory) a stream of goodness.

John Cage Piano

Celebrate the 100th birthday of composer John Cage by playing a virtual version of his 'prepared' piano - basically this involved putting a load of old metal bits and bobs under his piano's strings to "create an entirely new instrument". And now you can do it on an iPad with no nails or bolts required.

This free download is a described as a 'spare track' which is produced by John Agnello who's worked with the likes of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Kurt Vile.

Frank Friction is the alter-ego of Bootie Brown. On this tracks he's teamed up with Parisian producer Kurser who's also worked with the likes of De La Soul.

The remix comes courtesy of Fort Romeau aka UK electronic artist Mike Norris. His album Kingdoms also came out in March this year should you be moved enough by his work to dig a little deeper.
