MEMORY TAPES: 26TH NOVEMBER 2010

It's another father and son combination on Memory Tapes this week, as Stephen Thomas explains...

"Mine isn't one by me, but one my dad made a couple of years back. I used to think he had the worst taste in music - he listens to all sorts of middle-of-the-road stuff nowadays, and strangely camp things like Bette Midler or Barbra Streisand.

"A few years ago, when I was 18 or so, my dad started to through his old vinyl singles, ripping them to his computer and putting them on CDs that resembled, to the best of his memory, the old cassettes he used to play in his car when he was in his early twenties, back in the debut years of the 80s.

"Man, I couldn't believe the tracklist on these mixes. The music I knew was phenomenal and, usually, the ones I hadn't heard of were even better. My favourite one was called 'The Singles Collection #2', and whenever we're in a car together and he wants to listen to a Neil Diamond album, and I want to listen to, well, just about anything else, I'll chuck this on and we'll both be fine.

"It's just about the best compilation I've ever heard, and it's from a man who owns something like 6 Corrs albums. It's more focused on one genre than the other mixes - all punk and new-wave sort of sounds, a little bit of ska and a load of mad covers by bands I'd probably never have heard of if it weren't for this mix. Best tracks, if you ask me, are the tracks by Those Helicopters and Julie Covington. And the way that track six flows into track seven is excellent.
