It's that Memory Tapes time of the week wherein one of you lucky listeners gets five tunes played on the show that are taken from a quite brilliant old mixtape/cd/md you either made for someone or had made for you. It's all about celebrating the nostalgia really - not only does the music take you back, each tape tells its own story... This week's tape comes from one Daniel Carroll of Dublin. Submitting his tape, he wrote:

"Here's a memory tape I recently sent to a "lady friend". The oul' Scroobius Pip lyric comes to mind; "Thou shalt not use poetry, art or music to get into girls' underwear. Use it to get into their heads"....probably should have put the song on the tape now that I think of it..."

Fair enough. Here's the mighty tracklisting - haven't heard that Belle & Sebastian tune for an age:

New Order - Temptation

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message

Robert Wyatt - Sea Song

Belle & Sebastian - We Rule The School

Jesus & Mary Chain - Just Like Honey

The Walkmen - The Rat

Pulp - Help The Aged

Looper - Impossible Things

Paul Simon - Mother & Child Reunion

Wes Montgomery - I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance Without You

John Lee Hooker - I'm Mad Again

Darlene Love - Wait Till My Bobby Gets Home

Weezer - My Evaline

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Breaking Down The Walls Of Heart Ache

Otis Redding - Satisfaction

New York Dolls - Personality Crisis

John Lennon - My Mummy's Dead

We've all made them, and now we celebrate them... Lauren wants to know about the compliation tapes and CDs your friends, lovers and exs have made for you, and the ones you've made for them.

Dig one out, take a photo of it, scribble the tracklisting in an email along with your contact details and email it to Lauren. A bit of a back story about the compilation would be nice too; when you got it, who you made it for, whether you discovered some amazing new music as a result...

Then, Lauren picks five songs and plays them all on a Friday, exciting eh?!

This week's Memory Tape comes from Andy Ramsey in Wallsend who writes..."Dug this out of a box of compilations I used to put together for work, I would prepare one the night before a long shift in the Theatre and hope it would see me through. Now it's a steady diet of 6 Music and an ipod. Every compilation has to have Embarrassment on by Madness, it's the law!"

The artwork looks like this:

You've downloaded the MPFrees, and now what are you going to do with them? Well, how's this for an idea...?

We've collated all the links from this week, and one of Lauren's listeners has designed some artwork to go with them for you to download to your MP3 player. Massive.

For this week's design we asked you to produce a piece of art inspired by the title 'Pet Sounds' after a morning of animal-based facts. Thanks to Michelle Still for her efforts below:

mpfree_ep_19.03.jpg

Tigercity - Ancient Lover (French Horn Rebellion remix)

Neon Indian - Sleep Paralysis

Holy F - Latin America

Twin Sister - All Around And Away We Go

Warpaint - Billie Holiday

Some of the above free downloads are only posted for a limited amount of time; therefore not all may be available.

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

What a week it's been! After a turbulent week in the 6 Music camp, this week has been a bit of a return to normality. This week we played host to session guests including top Antipodean songstress Sarah Blasko (Monday), the perfectly-cheekboned Danish craftsmen of epic indie The Kissaway Trail (Wednesday), an extremely hungover Frightened Rabbit (Thursday) and headband-wearing disco popsters French Horn Rebellion (Friday).

frenchhornrebellion_550x360.jpg

Robin Ince also popped in on Tuesday to tell us about his latest School for Gifted Children shows and to talk about the time his entire record collection got covered in sewage :( and our own Grace Dent, Danny Robins and Mark Dinning dropped by on Monday, Thursday and Firday respectively to talk about BBC2's "Lambing Live", why Tia Maria and Guinness should not necessarily be kept apart and the very scary new fillum Shutter Island.

As usual our amazing listeners were my favourite bit of the week. This week we asked you to register as experts in... well, in whatever you're an expert in. We were inundated with knitters, MGMT superfans, vegetable-growers, artistic types and even particle physicists! You're all going into the system and will be called upon when the time is right. Like Batman. Be ready.

Anyway, our first show expert Dr Helen Hurley-Walker then joined us for a chat on Tuesday to tell us some awesome cosmology-type-physics and music facts. It made our brains hurt. You also excelled yourselves in compiling this week's People's Playlist. A half hour of themed tunes per week, as usual on the show. And since 6 turned 8 on Thursday the theme for this week's mix was our inner eight-year-old. You suggested songs from Bugsy Malone, Charly by the Prodigy and a haunting cover of God Only Knows by the Langley Schools Music Project. Small children singing breakdown classics about the impossibility of love. THAT'S WHY WE LOVE YOU, YOU FREAKS!

I'm off next week (boo!) finishing a book (writing, not reading) so will see you all the following Monday. In the meantime you will be in the capable paws of the gorgeous Jo Good - please treat her well!

This week's Memory Tape comes from Jamie McKay from Haynes, who writes: "I got this much loved and played tape from a student teacher years ago - we'd had a rather lovely few days and nights together, and then she went travelling and we lost touch. A lovely memory kept afloat by this tape as I plunge headlong into middle-aged respectability and dad-dancing.

"Nevermind though, I'm now a deliriously happily married chap, with a beautiful baby son who seems to be developing a taste in music beyond stadium anthems like 'Yes my name is Iggle-Piggle', thank god. He was joyously hopping around to the one of Longpigs' more sombre numbers the other day, the little weirdo. Good job I love him to bits."

The artwork to the compilation looks like this:
