Post categories:

Tom Assistant Producer|12:24 UK time, Monday, 3 May 2010

Jarvis was back and on form this week with a May Day surprise. He had music from birthday boy Engelbert Humperdinck, Arctic Monkeys and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, courtesy of his Mum's vinyl collection. Plus Monty Python legend and traveller extraordinaire Michael Palin joined us in the studio. The interview will be up on the blog for you soon.

Must say this Sunday Service was VERY enjoyable indeed, although I of course always say so but I don't really know how else I can word it! "Vera Lamonte" was a very nice song although it nearly brought me to tears...so sad, but lovely and a total surprise! And I VERY much enjoyed all of that very interesting interview/talk with Michael Palin...hope you'll post some photos! Have already listened three times to the show! I don't know if it's just me or are the shows getting EVEN better?...Or for that matter is it possible for Jarvis to be any better when he just seems to be excellent?...And even if Richard and Candida did a great show -like I said previously- they are not Jarvis....they can't "replace", but I'd love to hear them in a show of their own! Great Sunday Service with lots of beautiful music and interesting things to set your mind wandering in all sorts of directions!...As always looking forward to what Jarvis will come up with next time...but first I'll have to listen a few more times to this one to make the most of it!

Found this great video of Arctic Monkeys doing "A certain romance" at Reading Festival:

And here's The undertones doing "Jimmy Jimmy" at Top Of The Pops 1979:

-as Jarvis played it and as one of my son's named Jimmy! :)

Thanks so much for another great and inspiring programme, Jarvis! Jah Wobble+Japan was especially eye-opening:)
And a very special thank you for Mr Palin, who was I thought a bit subdued (don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, just expressing my concern), but nevertheless a great pleasure to hear (as always). I've been looking for that album of his and Terry Jones' lyrics for a long time, so thank you for playing at least one track, quite fascinating.
And isn't it a great thing to be able to listen to such great progs online! Our local radio is totally shite.

    Til next Sun, with love

I'm in Sweden and me too thinks that it's great to be able to listen online to wonderful programmes like "Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service"! Our local radio isn't much good here either! There isn't ANYTHING like "Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service" here.....but then again there isn't a "Jarvis" here either-unfortunately! :)

Vera Lamonte was very poignant. I know that feeling.... there were complications....
Maybe Vera can get together with Lucy Jordan to start their own genre.
