What did Comic Con tell us about the New Series?

The Doctor Who Team

The whole hoopla of San Diego Comic Con is over for another year and our thoughts turn to 19 September and the return of Doctor Who!

Last week we had the new trailer and the airdate for series 9, and after we watched the trailer 400 times we took another look at the Doctor Who panel… In effect this was Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman, Michelle Gomez and Steven Moffat trying not to tell us anything about the new series. You know the kind of thing – nervous looks to Steven, wry smiles and repeated use of the word spoilers - but we did manage to pick out a few interesting gems…

Jenna Coleman gave us a glimpse of what’s to come: ‘It’s our glory years! It’s really adrenaline-fuelled and all about living in the moment and pushing the adventure right up to the edge!’ Adventure right up to the edge? We like, we like! And what about the Doctor and Clara? ‘They’ve found their groove and they’re very united in the TARDIS, eating up all of time and space with reckless abandon.’ Reckless abandon? We like, we like! And we’ll stop doing that now.

She also said that Clara wants to ‘hang out with my best mate in the TARDIS!’ Well, who wouldn’t, given half a chance?

Peter Capaldi echoed Jenna’s thoughts. ‘I think because Clara and the Doctor feel more in a groove, they are really enjoying being the luckiest people in all of history because they get to play with this immense toy box… They throw themselves recklessly into the pursuit of adventure! Which is lovely, that’s a whole different tone.’

That all ties in within something executive producer Brian Minchin recently revealed: ‘This year he [the Doctor] is having the time of his life, having dangerous and exciting adventures in time and space. These are the glory days of the Doctor and Clara.’

This sounds to us like the whole ‘am I a good man?’ question has been answered and our heroes are moving onto new adventures. That leaves the Doctor and Clara free to do what they do best. Jigsaw puzzles! Only joking. No holds barred adventures, which brings us to… Missy!

We knew she was back but showrunner Steven Moffat teased us about how exactly she’d be returning. ‘The way Missy comes back into his life is not something you’re probably going to predict.’ Intriguing. Michelle Gomez confirmed, ‘She has to come at it from a different angle which is surprising and exciting… There’s something that’s slightly different about her…’

Concerned she’ll be changing too much? Don’t be. ‘Don’t worry!’ Steven Moffat said with a smile. ‘She’s still as vile and psychopathic as ever!’ Great. We wouldn’t want her any other way!
