Behind the Scenes of The Return of Doctor Mysterio
The Doctor Who Team

The 2016 Christmas Special was one of the most spectacular to date and we take a peek behind the scenes to look at the making of The Return of Doctor Mysterio…

The Return of Doctor Mysterio was Peter’s third Christmas Special. Or his fourth if we’re counting his brief appearance at the close of The Time of the Doctor!

It wasn’t just the return of Doctor Mysterio, Matt Lucas was also back in the famous duffel coat playing Nardole!

Scenes featuring the streets of New York were shot at the Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia, Bulgaria which have specially created sets designed to recreate the Big Apple. But Lucy’s apartment and its rooftop terrace were created in the BBC’s Roath Lock Studios in Wales.

Peter prepares for his next scene… The episode was directed by Ed Bazalgette who previously helmed The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived.

Justin Chatwin gets to grips with another action scene… And Aleksandar Jovanovic (Dr Sim)!

Charity Wakefield (Lucy) described the role as ‘an early Christmas present’!

Finishing touches being applied to this detail from Harmony Shoal’s New York office.

Shooting on the Special began on 5 September and wrapped on 4 October, 2016. Want more? Check out a bunch of great extras for The Return of Doctor Mysterio!
