Doctor Who ‘Create a Soundtrack’ Competition: Winners Announced!

The Doctor Who Team

Back in April, BBC Learning and BBC Proms launched a brilliant competition giving young people the chance to create a soundtrack to a recent clip from Doctor Who that will be showcased at the BBC Proms in 2013. The competition closed at the end of May and the winners have now been announced. Full details can be found in the BBC press release below:

BBC Proms and BBC Learning have announced the winners of their Doctor Who ‘Create a Soundtrack’ competition which challenged secondary school students to create their own musical soundtrack to a scene from the popular television series to be performed at the world famous BBC Proms festival at the Royal Albert Hall.

The four lucky winners – two in each of the categories, junior (11-14) and senior (14-16) – attended a workshop with Ben Foster, the orchestrator and conductor of Murray Gold’s music for Doctor Who, and Samuel Thompson the orchestration coordinator for the television series, at the iconic Maida Vale Studios on 20 June, and will continue to be mentored by Ben and Samuel over the coming weeks before seeing their soundtrack performed at the Doctor Who Proms on 13 and 14 July.

The jury which included Executive Editor Music Television BBC Cymru Wales Paul Bullock, composer Anna Meredith and conductor Ben Foster were extremely impressed by the quality of music submitted. Paul Bullock commented: “I was really impressed with the quality, creativity and individuality of the work submitted. The vivid imagination displayed across the wide range of entries truly captures the spirit of the Doctor Who series and I can’t wait to see the winners’ works come to life at the Proms!”

The winners of the Doctor Who ‘Create a Soundtrack’ Competition are:

JUNIOR CATEGORY (11-14 years):

William & Jordan (Biddulph High School, Stoke-on-Trent)

William and Jordan commented: “Being big fans of Doctor Who, it is great to have our music recognised on the BBC Proms stage. We are now really looking forward to the Doctor Who Proms that are kicking off the season.”

SENIOR CATEGORY (14-16 years):

Gabe & Matthew (Cirencester Deer Park School, Gloucestershire)

Gabe and Matthew commented: “This is an amazing experience and a fantastic opportunity, particularly working with Ben and Sam to gain a real insight into this side of the music world. This experience has inspired us to work in this wonderful field of music-making and we are so looking forward to hearing our piece at the Proms.”

Many thanks to everyone who entered. As mentioned in the press release, the standard was remarkably high and demonstrated the musical abilities of the thousands of young people who came up with such brilliant soundtracks.
