Awards Triumph!

The Doctor Who Team

Doctor Who’s Executive Producer and lead writer, Steven Moffat.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts have announced they will be honouring Doctor Who’s Executive Producer and lead writer, Steven Moffat, with the 2012 Television Special Award. The accolade recognises his ‘outstanding creative writing contribution to television’ and will be presented on 27 May at the BAFTA TV Awards ceremony.

Responding to the news, Steven Moffat said, ‘Blimey! A Special Award! I didn't even know I was ill! So thrilled by this – especially after two years of Sherlock and Doctor Who, my two favourite shows ever. Of course the work, and the people I get to work with, has always been all the reward I need – a fact I'm very glad that BAFTA has disregarded.’

Tim Corrie, Chairman of BAFTA, commented that ‘He [Steven] is one of the finest exponents of his craft and his Award, presented in honour of the late, great Dennis Potter, is very well deserved indeed.’

There was also good news for Doctor Who at this year's Nebula Awards, the annual event held by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation went to Neil Gaiman (writer) and Richard Clark (director) for The Doctor’s Wife. In accepting the award, Neil paid tribute to Steven Moffat and two of Doctor Who’s early pioneers, Verity Lambert and Sydney Newman.

Huge congratulations to Steven Moffat, Neil Gaiman, Richard Clark and everyone in the Doctor Who team! And finally, don’t forget you can watch the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday 27 May, 8pm on BBC One & BBC One HD.
