Hay Day Of My Career

Chris Evans|16:29 UK time, Friday, 3 June 2011

What an amazing bundle of talent was on display in our 500 Words 50 finalists at Hay today.

Sure - there had to be two overall winners, but everyone seemed equally as thrilled to be there. And what an effort from our ten guest readers to come and join in the fun.

All round, we loved the whole experience - and yes - we are doing it again next year, apart from that Alex Jones woman who demanded jelly and ice cream upon arrival...and one bacon sandwich every 20 miles home, until we were within half an hour of The One Show studios.

I'm with her now. She's beating her chest in a primeval fashion in a way that would make Raquel Welsh green with envy circa One Million Years B.C.

LOL Chris, you paint such a picture of eloquence where Ms Jones is concerned!

The writing talent this morning was truly astounding - thank you for letting us hear it, and let's hope that the creative juices keep flowing for those little ones!

Nearly home time. I predict an imbibement of wine on the patio, and then Him Indoors is cooking ... heavenly joy behold!

See you on The Sofa (altho probably not at 7 - we tend to record you in HD and watch later!)

    Muchos amore.

    Hello CE & Everyone.

It sounds like a very happy time was had at Hay. There are some very talented young writers and it must have been difficult for the judges to choose the winners but like you say everyone must have been thrilled to have been there.

I don't believe you regarding Alex and the bacon butties. I can believe the jelly and ice cream bit but I bet it was you who kept on stopping for every 20 miles for them and that you're using Alex as an excuse. I've seen the twitter photo and it is you who looks as though you've eaten quite a few bacon butties LOL. I'm only joking of course as neither of you do.

The summer has indeed arrived MM, not sure I like it this warm!! Sorry!!

But been trying to cut the lawn for weeks, and it's rained, and now it's too hot to stand out there, for me anyway...

Not caught up as usual, so hugs to anyone who needs them, and a Hi!! to those that don't!!

Hi Chris and all the usual bloggers!

Just back from Hay! We've had an amazing couple of days. My hubby and son saw Jeremy Strong, while I saw Jacqueline Wilson with my daughter Ruth today. Fantastic!! What an experience. This was hot on the heels of briefly meeting then seeing you with Anne Robinson on Thursday evening. All my Birthdays and Christmases have come at once!!

Ruth was one of the 30,000 who entered the 500 words competition but wasn't lucky enough make the shortlist. Hearing the finalists this morning on our journey to Hay today, we were overwhelmed! How incredible are those stories?!! We met a couple of the shortlisted writers and both of them were beaming with pride! Ruth has her fingers crossed the competition will run again next year so she can keep writing and send in another entry! She is writing away now as I'm typing!!

Thanks so much for falling in love with Hay, coming up with the inspiration for the competition and cutting through the red tape to make it a reality!

Hope you and your lovely family have a great weekend.

    Lots of love

    Hello.

Everyone must be out on this fine summer's evening. Or maybe like me all on jigzone.

Rips-if you are about I saw you on Al Murray's game show on Dave last night and you were very good, a natural on TV. I thought it was a good idea to crunch the crisps before opening in order to eat them faster. I do that to make them quieter when watching the telly.

Right back to jigzone which I'm getting addicted to.

Chris, the show from Hay was fantastic and the stories! SO good. Really pleased you're planning to do it again

That Alex Jones though! Trying to lead you into bad ways was she? Doesn't she know you're a reformed soul now! ;-) (Is she reading over your shoulder as you write this?)

Annie, sorry, was at friends last night eeating and drinking and chatting! Any merlooooot left for tonight?

Rips, I watched the first half of the the quiz and have the second to catch up with. Boy1 watched too, probably the first time he's seen Al Murray in full Pub Landlord mode! Oh, what have I done!

Evening CLP and any bloggers out there! Have to agree about the wealth of literary talent on display at Hay yesterday. i only heard the odd one or two story but was mightily impressed, especially with Angus' super scary tale!!

Missed the One Show last night, it was a beautiful day in the 'burgh so after a wee post work sunbathe in the park I then joined some friends for some al fresco rosé. We went to a boat which is permanently moored in the Leith area of Edinburgh and has been convereted into a bar/restaurant, and spent a lovely time sipping wine on the deck until the sun dipped below the buildings . Bliss!

And of course today it has been cloudy and cold, here's hoping that the last two days wasn't our summer....

Hope everyone has had a good day.

Chrissie, I can understand MrS's fridge raiding. it was only the total banality of BGT that bought the younger family members down to earth (and that includes me I'm afraid to say!)

You know it's going to be a long day when the first words you hear from your offspring are "So, if River Song is.........."

Deebee, the gate's on order I think!

It's certainly a grey day after the Hay day here today. A trip to change some trousers -too long - and maybe a detour to the craft shop is in order I think!

We had a lovely time, although the weather took its toll yesterday. We drove to Worcester (50ish miles each way) to watch the cricket. The rain started to fall as we drove into the town to park up, and it didn't stop all afternoon. By 5pm the Umpires deemed it unplayable and the match was abandoned without a single ball being bowled. Picnic was nice tho!

    Hi everyone:

Can't believe it's Monday already! I also listened again to Friday's show - some of it on Saturday morning and the rest yesterday morning. MrS said: "it's kind of like Groundhog Day around here"!

Annie and mtd: glad you had a nice meet-up, and mtd: it's good to hear that your OH has discovered we are all quite normal ... I well remember my first couple of blog meets when MrS was sure I would be kidnapped by mad axe murderers!

AliB: Shame that Beryl has had to move away, but yes, a great excuse for meeting up with her for chips!

Sezza: did you get to the craft shop?

Bids: hope you had a nice weekend.

Lin: well done on making some extra money - if I decided to sell all my "junk" in a car boot sale, I would just end up buying the "junk" from the person next to me - I just know it!

Anyone want to do a quick appraisal for me of everything thats been going on....?! No? Didnt think so! Promise to try and keep up more!

Hay sounded amazing Chris and the winning entries for the 500 words comp were amazing...I`m sure i could only just write my own name at the age of some of the youngsters (no comments about my spel-ling, tye-ping now thank you very much!) I`ve `persuaded` the GM that we need to go to Hay one year..although I think the thought of me surrounded by books/authors and other literary minded bods brings him out in a cold sweat. I have just done a `cull` of books and still have 2 very full, triple stacked bookcases...oops!

Hope everyone is reasonably well and looking forward to the summer....I`m an optimist ok!

And on a last note I cant beleive its only 14.39 on Monday... had a mad busy, tiring but productive and enjoyable weekend chez Scoobs but am now jiggered... oh,and i have the delight of an hours journey on public transport to get me home too... will definitely be needing wine!

I'm afraid that Hay has become the "Glasto" of the literary world.

It has become the place to be seen and there seems to be more celebrities with books to sell than genuine writers.

    Evening All!

Am SO ashamed at my neglect of Mr. Chris's blog just lately. It's all Jasper's fault - for some bizarre reason he likes to spend the warm summer evenings outside! Selfish beastie...! ;-) Hope everyone is well and happy.

I was TOTALLY blown away by the quality of the writing in the stories that were read out on Friday; some incredible talent there. As well as the enjoyment of the excellent competition, it was really nice to hear such encouragement of the youngsters from Chris and his colleagues. There's always SO much that's negative being bandied-about regarding kids these days, and it was nice to hear polite, articulate, intelligent children being rightly praised and encouraged. Hope they all go on to do nice things in life.

Surely if it was just you and a person of restricted growth, then it would be a mini, mini meet but if you just met fleetingly in ELH or Sainsbugs, then it would be a mini, mini, mini meet.

But when does a mini meet become a midi meet or indeed a full blown Blog Meet?

Is the length of time, the number of people involved or even the size of the people involved?

There must be a complicated logarithm to establish such things that only those in the know are privy to.

    Morning chums!

Fanx for all the congrats - I'm so enjoying this course, and I really, really hope it leads to a new career path, one way or t'other.

Bright and breezy here in The Midlands with rain due later. Frizzy hair guaranteed,

Lovely to see you back blogging Roo, and a woof woof to Jasper.

I was loving Chris's talk of "The Best" on the show this morning - for food combos it's got to be a bacon and egg sandwich. Simply The Best. Although that may possibly change by lunchtime!

    Back later.

Morning everyone! Congratulations on the results Deevs. It's not easy studying and working, so hats off to you, my friend.

Speaking of friends, I enjoyed The Track That Takes You Back this morning. Oh, and happy belated birthday to Rips (eating pickled onions late at night - never a wise move).

By the way Plum, if you feel that this blog isn't meeting your intellectual needs, I note that Nick Robinson's BBC blog is discussing the IMF's analysis of the Chancellor's strategy to eliminate the structural deficit. I had a scroll through the list of contributors but I couldn't see you anywhere.

Better do a spot of work. Have a great day, everyone.

    Good morning all,

Overcast and a tad chilly here - no surprise there then!

Hiya Clodagh - hope you are all well. Thanks for Moon River - loved the story behind it. xx

Christoph - Thank you for mentioning our Lanark Blue made here in Lanarkshire. I love blue cheese and that one is a particular favourite. Really enjoyed the foody chat this morning and had to agree about the French Baguette I can't stop eating it when I'm in sunny France especially when it's covered in lashings of tapenade! I did have my porridge this morning but all that talk of food has me hungry and lunchtime seems a long way off - good job my chilli is still frozen!

James May was great could have listened to him for hours - naughty journalist!

Well best get my nose to the grindstone as they say.

    Have a good day folks!

    Hi everyone:

Just feeling a little mad this morning, so mad that I might actually think what I am about to say will interest anyone! (#71).

Just want to say to Roo, nice to see you last night.

JG: I know just what you mean about your break going so fast. When you have time off, it seems like it will last forever, and then it just disappears in a flash! Hope you have a nice time with your mum, and a great time at TT!

Bids: how lovely to have a visitor from the past! Hope you had a nice time with your friend.

Tiggs: hope your day gets a little warmer.

    Barmy: nice to see you.

Hi Mary: yes, wasn't it nice to hear from Clodagh this morning? I miss her stories of the DDF!

    Cheryl: I love picnics!

CSN: lovely to hear you have the sun - I am wearing my thermals this morning! Only joking - enjoy your day!

    Hope everyone is ok.

    Morning All,

Looks like I missed the rest of a cracking show this morning.
Stuck in a VW dealership at Heathrow, waiting, while they replace the wheel bearing that I told them was on its way out four weeks ago.
They told me it was the tyre which I dutifully replaced at a cost of £280, all for nothing! Cheers....

Anyway.....Looks like I missed James May and Clodagh....bugrit!

Thanks for the birthday wishes Barmy and to everyone who joined in.
I, like Chris, had a heavy old weekend and am playing catch up now.
Do you think they'd mind if had a snooze here?

Got a 4 person (pc!) tent for my birthday, so we're off on our first camping expedition as a family this weekend......any tips?
Stay in a hotel is not a tip!

    Hope you're all well

    hello everyone

    Morning All,

Warm but a bit dull in North Kent.

Looks like someone was having a conversation with themselves last night, and she calls us mad!!! Yes that's you LDC and CLP!

I personally come on here because I consider these bloggers friends and I am genuinely interested in their goings on. I have never sought to have my name mentioned on the radio and if Chris walked past me in the street I don't expect he would have a clue who I was (and why would he). I like his Breakfast Show, but sometimes he does get on my nerves. All of this is my personal and humble opinion, which I am entitled to.

Barmy, Good to see you xx

Rips, You should have listened to the JV show a week ago Friday, there were lots of tips for first time campers. The main on being don't pitch at the bottom of a hill or where anyone else hasn't pitched. The chances are that if it rains you will get flooded! Happy Camping :)

Just to wind up LDC/CLP/or Whatever - As Mary seems to be having chili for lunch, I shall tell you what I'm having - a chicken salad, concocted myself this morning, which some of my Dad's home grown radishes. Yum.

Oh well back to the grindstone.

  • Comment number 99.

Hi AliB: terrific post from you this morning! Oooh, I do love a radish!

Yes, absolutely fascinating to watch someone have a chat with herself - must be the equivalent of when I talk to myself when I'm at home alone ... except I am not doing that in front of thousands of people!

Rips: nightmare scenario with the car. No redress, I presume? Have fun camping ... sorry to say my tip would be to stay in a hotel!

Keith: having problems with the squirly thing? When you have completed your post and click "post comment", then hit F5 or Refresh, and your comment will appear!

    aclass: hello to you too.

Hiya Chrissie and Ali and everyone else!

    Camping tips for Rips:

    1. Take a Valium before trying to put the blasted thing up. Man, it's stressful.
    2. Tie something bright around the guy ropes either side of the entrance. These are the ones you'll trip over the most.
    3. Don't get undressed next to the lamp inside the tent when it's dark outside - you know why. You've seen Carry on Camping.
    4. Take a temporary vow of chastity.
    5. Lay off the pickled onions, for everyone's sake.

    Love Barmy x
