Things, So Many Things.

Chris Evans|11:13 UK time, Tuesday, 18 January 2011

Had my first "catch up" with Hells Bells our Exec Prod today. After which, let me tell you - it seems like 2011 is gonna be a pretty busy one on the radio.

There's lots of big good stuff scheduled to take place, none of which I can reveal today but all of which seems like it's almost certain to happen. Several outside broadcasts are involved - always a good sign !!!

Gary Barlow tomorrow. Don't miss him, he's 40 you know.

Damn - missed the 'new blog' so rewritten last comment here ........

Hello Peeps, what a lovely day today (hope it is where you are) I'm in the office this morning (on the top floor) looking out over the Norwich landscape and it makes you feel pretty darn good I can tell you! not a cloud in the sky.
Weetabix discussion - hmmm, can't really get my head around the butter & jam bit but as a none milk drinker I couldn't fancy a soggy mess either - euwwww! Mind you, I do like porridge - made with milk & no sugar though, what's that all about?
Roo - loved Jaspers joke, not really sure I should admit to that, should I?
JG - I hate having passengers in my car - they always talk over the best music!
I have listened to Vanessa & although she does sound a bit nervous (who wouldn't!) I think she'll settle in really well.
Loving having CLP back, I know he has to have a break, but please could we have another presenter next time - not RM!
Right - work to do, onwards & upwards .........

Gary Barlow - I can't wait!! The only problem is I find his voice quite hypnotic - not the best conditions for driving in!!

    Hiya!

CG (((x)))It is indeed beautiful here too - such a joy to see that strange shiny thing in the sky and the little green shoots growing up

I've just walked around our estate WITHOUT A COAT!!! I can recommend to anyone feeling "it" at the moment, to sneak outdoors for 10 mins and feel the lightness in the air

Deevs, (((x)))you know SHE is probably feeling very threatened by having someone more experienced than she is working for her don't you? Can't bear the thought that someone else can do those vital things other than her and doesn't know how to delegate efficiently.

I think you've given it long enough to see if you can educate her in ways to use a PA properly so give up! If she wants to struggle, let her. Do what you're given but the hard work will be keeping your mind busy as you while away the hours til you can go home to your man. Crosswords anyone? ;-) Good luck with the job hunting. I'm sure you and Nic will have discussed all the options if you really can't bear to be there any more

Ali (((x))) to you! If we're all alone in our offices, does that mean we're all in the office together? Pass the stapler will you! Have you planned any exciting plans for this year yet or are they still brewing?

I'm trying to wean myself off a certain fizzy diet drink, the one that comes with a window cleaner - have you seen how much it costs now!! So far I can report the Sainsbugs -all natural flavours - is yuck and the ELH even cheaper is ok actually!

    Sezza xx

  • Comment number 6.

JG Talking about voices, wasn't Matt Le Blanc's lovely yesterday?

    xxx

  • Comment number 7.

Seza - I quite like the ELH diet one, but my fave is the branded one that begins with a P and ends in an I. It always seems more "peppery" than the window cleaner brand.

I've jsut got back from ELH and have "treated" myself to a bottle of Rose as it was only £3 (oj offer - yay!). The same brand is about £4.20 a glass in our local.

I hear what you're saying about my boss, but we do different jobs (or we're meant to!) She just won't let go of some of the basic admin stuff tho, so subsequently she ends up huffing and puffing and stressing and staying til half six every night whilst I sit here ho humming.

    Ho Hum!

I spent a lot of time on my jigsaw yesterday (a 1000 piece puzzle, not a piece of carpentry) and it's coming together nicely now. I've only ever done 2 in my life (adult ones, not counting helping mini Nic or my childhood Noddy ones!) and I am really enjoying it. Mini Nic helped a bit at the weekend too - he thought the Muppets were "Scary" (it's a 1970s toybox jigsaw).

How will we now if its Gary Barlow or John Culshaw on air with CLP tomorrow!?!?

Hi Chris: I have absolutely no doubt that there are BIG things arranged for this year! Though, you will really have to pull out all the stops to top last year's outside broadcasts, etc - all just fantastic.

So looking forward to tomorrow's show - Gary is just a sweetheart!

Hi everyone else: back in a bit!

    Hello everyone,

Beautiful and sunny here in Ayrshire today, quite cold though and very icy roads on the way in this morning.

    Chrissie - Belated Happy Anniversary.

I'm looking forward to Gary on the show tomorrow, however, last year whenever there were any guest co-presenters, they didn't come on till after 8am which is when I start work, so hopefully he will be on for the full show.

I'm actually quite enjoying Vanessa Feltz in the morning, she sounds good so far.

Hope everyone has a good day, well as good as you possibly can!

    Gail.

  • Comment number 10.

Deevs - it sounds like she's trying to justify her own position and won't delegate for fear of people finding out just how little she REALLY has to do!! Perhaps the poor woman has no life outside the company.

Sun is shining brightly here and I've just taken Sezza's advice and been out for a walk sans coat - it was liberating! Now I'm going to get stuck into my cheese roll and the Telegraph crossword ... I could be gone some time!

Deevs, Sainsbugs stuff tastes of cinnamon!! Just plain wierd!

    Jilly, s'lovely isn't it!

Gail, heard a bit of Vanessa when Mr S's alarm went off. Think she'll be ok but no way am I setting my alarm any earlier than 6.30am!

Jilly, ME ME ME ME ME!!!!!

Watched the one-off programme last year and was touched and revolted(i think) in the same measure by the lives of these young girls. Can't wait to see more especially the little girls and their first communion dresses!

    Sezza xxx

  • Comment number 16.

Sezza - me too! I was gobsmacked at the size of the dresses and also the pain they were willing to put themselves through - some dresses are heavier than the brides! And as for the little ones and their first communion dresses .... oh dear oh dear - I can't wait!

  • Comment number 17.

Ooooooooooh that could fill a hole tonight - Nic off to pub quiz* so me and Marlon and the bottle of Rose are home alone.

*I've decided to give the quiz a miss for a while. There's 5 of us in the team, the others are far cleverer than me (altho probably not as practical, given that I am the only female.....!), and it just adds to my sense of inferiority when my answers get ignored, only for them to be right in the end!!

Sezza, Don't worry, I don't get up specifically to hear her, it's just that she's on from 5.45 when I get up to muck out the horses, before our lovely CLP.

Have just noticed on FB that Gary Barlow is on from 8 am, Bumms, as Annie would say, I'm going to miss him. Oh well.

    Afternoon Each,

Chris, I look forward to what you have in store for us this year and like Dozy I wish the guests would come on earlier than 8 o'clock most of us are up and out the door by then.

Jilly, I won't be watching it, although it does sound interesting ~:) I used to organise conferences and was in a hotel in Brighton once where there was a Gypsy wedding going on. I happened to be in the managers office when the father of the bride came in to pay, I offered to leave but was told to stay and 100% true he paid for the wedding in cash in a briefcase! I've never seen anything like it and probably never will again.

Sezza, Thanks for the hug and can you pass the hole punch :) I don't have any plans yet for an exciting adventure. But I am hoping to go back to Zimbabwe in December. However there is a possibility of elections there this year and any whites entering the country are thought to be journalists, and banned, so I will have to see how it pans out.

What mammoth task shall I start this afternoon?

    xx

  • Comment number 20.

    Ali, Catch!!

in the programme last year thye said that when they organise a Gypsy wedding they don't tell anyone where the reception venue is until after service because if people turn up early, the venue often refuses them all entry or says the kitchens are out of order! So difficult for everyone involved!

Good luck with the travel plans.

Wonder where the outdoor broadcast breakfast shows are going to be this year? Can't imagine Sir Tel would have strayed far from the studio!

PS Drove past your juicy motor after breakfast this morning.....Phwoarrr! Gorgeous colour - are you planning another run in the Mille Miglia?

Morning everyone else - can I just crawl in and belated congratulate Chrissie and MrS on that momentous anniversary.....Congratulations x

Hope everyone else is doing dandy x

Won't see the wedding programme or sadly, the second part of Silent Witness which I became addicted to last week having never seen it before - as I'm out to our local theatre to see Gyles Brandreth in what Danny Baker reckons, is a fantastic show.....rock and roll!

Just to say thank you to everyone who has been so lovely with the anniversary wishes for me and the hilarious MrS: JG, MC, MTF, Bids, AliB, Gail, and Rips. You guys are so thoughtful and I do appreciate it. (I did also say some thank-you's yesterday too!)

JG: I think your passenger was rude beyond belief. It's been a hundred years (well, 18) since I drove a car, but I would have been MOST displeased if anyone had tinkered with the buttons and dials on my M*ni M*tro!

MC: lovely to see you -I really laughed at the thought of Mr MC blowing the lights in the living room!

MTF and Cheryl: thank you, we did have a lovely evening last night. MsS and her boyfriend seem to be so happy together - it was lovely for me and MrS to see that they share a lot of laughter. My daughter asked, at 8.30 - what would have been happening at this time, 35 years ago? I answered, well, I would think we would have been dancing to Dancing Queen, as that was played at least 40 times throughout our wedding party! Cue Dancing Queen being played at full blast ChezS - I hope our neighbour didn't mind!

AliB: re: Chris singing over the records and trailers - you know, I do agree. This drives me round the bend with Steve Wright, so I hope Chris is not going down the same road! Perhaps a wee email, to the man himself?!

Cheryl: I must have missed something about you not feeling well. Hope you are better now.

Gail: bless you working with the horses every morning before work. I know you love it, but it must still be such hard work. I do want to hear Vanessa, but it will have to be on Listen Again!

Sorry this is so long - back to work!

Afternoon all and welcome back Christoff. I've missed you (although I'm getting very fond of The Madeley as it happens).

Well, now that things have settled down a bit I thought I'd hit the local cinema. We're not talking multiplex here, we're talking a tiny cinema with one lady who gives you a ticket then steps one pace to the right and takes it back off you to rip it in two and give you half of it back. I think she is also the lady who comes round with the ice creams. Anyway, I wanted to see The King's Speech but it's sold out FOR THE WHOLE WEEK. I particularly want to see it because I'm intrigued as to what the warning of "Very strong language in a speech therapy setting" entails.

Might have to stay in and watch the Gypsy Wedding programme instead, or enjoy my liver and bacon in front of Silent Witness (perhaps not . . ).

Anyway, where are these outside broadcasts going to be then? Can't wait to see you lot again.

    Love Barmy xxx

  • Comment number 26.

Gawd, it's quiet in 'ere innit?

Barmy, the strong language bit is very funny and you WILL laugh!

There used to be a cinema just as the one you describe, in a place called Burnham On Crouch in Essex. It was called The Amazing Rio Cinema and me and my best friend ventured there to see a couple of Johnny Depp films, in the days when Mr Depp was still picky about his art and only had smaller cinema releases (pre Jack Sparrow!)

It always used to make me laugh - the same lady who sold the tickets would also change cubicles to sell you confectionary (not overpriced like at the Odeon tho!), and they also had a small popcorn machine in the foyer which had rainbow popcorn in it, which was a bit like chewing polystyrene. The cinema also had a break midway through the film when the same lady would appear with some Cornettos or Orange Maid lollies. I always wondered if she was the projectionist too!

Chrissie - I'm not unwell as such, just going through a patch of the blues. And not in a Muddy Waters kind of way - more Muddy Moods!

Just over half an hour left then it's hometime.

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

A nice day here in Wirral. My computer is now running smoothly again after previously using all my credit just to update. Very annoying indeed but now all well :)

Glad that the 'catch up' with Hells Bells went well Chris and hoping that the weather will be good for the outside broadcasts.

Can't wait to hear Gary Barlow on tomorrow's show but I'll have to show a little Patience!

Jilly-thank you, I thought tonight's TV was poor but didn't notice My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding which I'll certainly be watching.

I'm bound to laugh Deevs - I love a bit of swearage. Oooh, and I'd forgotten all about rainbow popcorn.

No the problem is the museum was closed!!!!!!
January & off season fro mowing!!!!!!

So a was determined not ter let this ruin me birthdee.... So a returned 'ome & spent the whole afternoon phoning various companies were yer 'ave ter give yer date of birth!!!!!!
From life insurance... ter joining me local samaritans!!!!!!!
All in the 'ope that when a come ter the bit where a give me date of birth.... 'BINGO!!!!!!!!'
A 'it them with the same date being me birthdate... And they will interupt proceedings ter wish me a 'appy birthdee!!!!!!
A even manged ter get me local funeral directors ter sing me a 'appy birthdee!!!!!!!!
(obviously a wasn't interested in using the services of all the companies a phoned... But it certainly made me birthdee go nice ter 'ave so many strangers wish me a 'appy birthdee!!!!!
Then later it was off out with me new girlfriend from Thailand for a slap up meal & she even surprised me with a birthdee cake full of candles & a load of presents!!!!!! (100% TRUE!!!!!)

    Evening all!

MaddyM - Hehehe! Lets just "Pray" that nothing goes well and that GB gets to "Shine" tomorrow morning... Dear, oh dear.

Keith BigUn - That is SO sweet, what a lucky lady Mrs. BigUn is! Hope you enjoy the film.

Jasper and I will definitely be watching the Gypsy programme on 4oD - the first one was really interesting. Sometimes, though, my colleagues and I have to deal with what certain sections of the travelling community leave behind (or otherwise) when they travel ever-onwards and that's not very "entertaining". That said, all the true Romanies I've personally met have been very nice folk.

Keith - that's so lovely. Just when I'd stopped blubbing, you've started me off again, but in a good way. Have a fantastic evening and trust me, you will enjoy The King's Speech. x x x

And despite what I said above in Post #17 I've decided that I am going out to the pub quiz with my man this evening. Having been sad and tearful since I got home from work, and a partial breakdown on Twitter, I really don't want to sit in alone tonight hugging a bottle of cheap Rose. I don't care that there's 5 in the team, or that I'm the thickest one of the 5 - I am going out and that's that! And if I think one of my answers is right, I WILL shouto it from the rooftops. So there.

Thanks for all your support on here - I really need it right now, and can almost hear Beezer in my head telling me to grow a pair!

Roo: surely you hoped *everything* went to plan tomorrow? Or GB won't Shine that's for sure ;)

Deevs: pub quiz sounds like an idea, company will do you good, I'd come too and we could chat in the corner if I was close enough. In my absence: talk to the bar staff to ignore your not v friendly team mates? One day, they'll learn to trust your answers (I live in hope).

Hugs to anyone needing one (or more)

Oz - team mates are lovely, don't get me wrong, they just make me feel very inferior in the intellect stakes! They were grateful for my knowledge of Darius Danesh one week in the nusic round, and my stalker-like obsession with Russell Brand won us the quiz a few weeks back! I'll just have to be more assertive!

The pub isn't one of the best - it frequently run out of stuff, like beer, or gin, or pork scratchings. One week, when it was my turn to drive, I asked the divine Maureen behind the bar for a pint of lager and lime shandy. She was completely baffled, befuddled, bemused and bewildered but we got there in the end.

Sezza ,know how you feel about E/enders I used to watch t but got fed up with the outragous story line that they are going through at the mo .
so I was doing something more constructive ,I was writing my above post .
Just watching Holby now ,would like to watch the gipsy wedding prog but don't think I've got any chance as Mr B watches the CSI's.And I'm not going into the kitchen .

Been thinking about a tv in the b/room but really dont want to go down that road .The only other way is to go into the boys b/room and watch it there ,oh !!!! the choices the prog would be over before I decide .

Deevs: I think Bids is right, you need a girlie team one week for a change. It'd be funny if you beat the lads ;) Blog meet at Deev's quiz night anyone? (best warn them Deev, if I'm coming they need lots of fruity still drinks ;) ) Hope you enjoyed your night out and showed the lads what you're made of :)

Evening to everyone else who's snook in in my absence, I just nipped out to see a few people and managed to be back before pumpkin time. My neighbours will wonder what's up since normally when I go out in an evening it's gone 11 before I return... I have this habit of getting chatting and starting to nod off in the pub.

I'm liking all this talk of blog meets, I really ought to get myself to one, promised myself I would one day.

Ooh! Blog meet, you say?! and Chris's outside broadcasts sound 'citing!!

    Hope Deevs wins big tonight!

Bids - hiya - you'll be able to catch the Gypsy programme on Youtube, on the 4oD documentaries channel. That's where I'll watch it, as I don't have a TV.

JG - missed the one about the passenger twiddling your knobs - that's SO annoying. Jasper HAS worked out vaguely how the car radio works, but his powers are limited to switching it on and/or off. Then again, I am merely his servant on Earth, so I guess the car is his, mostly. He's been upstairs by himself for a couple of hours and I dread to think what I'm going to find up there. His latest thing seems to be constructing elaborate dens from stolen items of clean washing and then trying to... well... I think one pair of pyjamas, a 'going-out' shirt and several socks might be, erm..., "with pup"... Hmmm...

Jillygoat - any crossword clues you're stumped over? I love quizzes and crosswords me, not that I'm much good... ;-)

An entire box of clean washing overturned, and one of the most majestic Jasper-nests ever witnessed. At least, from what I can see, the clean washing is still clean... And, somehow, he's managed to unearth from somewhere a shirt I haven't seen for months. I don't know how he does it, I really don't. I almost feel guilty about dismantling all his hard work... Wasn't it lovely last time we were there. I must have a look back over the pics.

I dont know if I am tempting fate here, but.....

No-one has discussed how eerily mild it has been. We have most of our storage heaters switched off.

Surely, for the South of the country ( maybe not so much for you lovely lasses North of the border or thereabouts ) it has to be one of the mildest Januarys on record?,,, so far!

I travelled over the Somerset Levels in daylight today, it was light until about 5.30, lovely big moon and lots and lots of swans about.

Hello MTF and CSN, big hugs. x

CSN - thanks so much for asking about the tests, you're lovely. I'll get the results next Wednesday. My heart-rate is OK but the blood pressure is way up. The doc says she's "not happy for me to be walking round with blood pressure that high"... Well, I don't tend to do much impromptu flying these days... grrrr!!! I don't understand what the numbers mean; I think mine was 154 over 104 - is that normal? Bit high probably, but I'm not too worried. Don't know why anyone's looking at it really, - I mean, I'm packing a few extra pounds, but not vast, and I'm quite a good girl really... I think it's to do with some yummy tablets I have to take every day. Can be a bit of a 'risk' apparently.

But I really don't think that I have anything to worry about. I have Jasper and he has his new pant-fortress, how much more perfect than that does life actually get?!

    Happy days,

Good job I hadn't put my gloves away!

So, is that Jasper picking out your outfit for tomorrow?

He sounds like good company :) My boss has dogs and lots of cats. They are over the moon, because the baby lab has learned how to open the door and let the others out. Until, the mud season started and now it is a full time job, wiping down the doors and all the heat is flying out of the doors, which she had not fortunately mastered the art of closing behind her!!

  • Comment number 79.

Bids - Ah, thanks for the heads-up. I'm sure all will be well. Hope yours will be too. xx

MTF - Yes, Jasper generally picks my wardrobe selection. By "picks", I mean I sort out items he's snaffled and defiled for re-washing and intensive counselling, and wear the pieces that made it below his radar... But, I can guarantee you this, that if HE finds a SINGLE Roo-hair on HIS outfit, then there's hell-to-pay!

Sounds like your boss has their hand full! Baby labs are into everything! Jasper's predecessor (a collie/lurcher cross, exceptionally intelligent, called Tess) could open doors - including car doors - and so had to be closely watched. Generally, I'd put her in the car, lock the door and then get in myself on the drivers' side ('twas an old car, with no central locking, back then). As ever, the luck of the Roo always holds true. The inevitable happened in the vets' car park one day. In went Tess, Roo locked door, car key remained beside Tess on passenger seat. D'oh! As I tried to prod up the door-button by poking a twig through the barely-open window, I couldn't decide what was worse - the people in the vets' waiting room laughing at me through the window - or Tess glaring at me with a withering look of disgusted contempt, which made me feel like a squashed earwig.

You enjoy your snow, though. just keep it to yourself ;-)

    R xx

  • Comment number 82.

LOL Roo,the words 'snow' and enjoy' dont belong in the same sentence.

I have been looking for 'my' swans on the levels today. No sign of them. I know one more area that they may be.

A lot of swans died in that cold snap, they couldn't recognise wtaerways for landing as they were frozen for such a long time. So, a lot were landing on the m/way and were then unable to take off.

Others simply got frozen into the water and were unable to survive.

I know a lot was done to try and rescue them, as a member of the Somerset Wildlife trust, I get updates on such things and would have been there to help myself, had it not been for being at the hospital everyday.

MTF, Jasper hates swans with a deadly passion - but even he would not have wished that fate upon them. Poor things.

I work for the Countryside Service and sometimes it is quite heartbreaking. But we do like to feed birds in our little garden. Jasper wrote an article just the other day for our local magazine about garden birds and how to feed them properly. He even included his recipe for making bird-seed "cake" (fat-balls, basically). I'd admire his motives - if I could be convinced that he wasn't doing it for cat-baiting purposes... ;-)

    Roo xx

  • Comment number 85.

Bids - those dogs sound fab, bless 'em.

Dunno what it is about fox-poo. Jasper is totally incapable of resisting it. I think he veers slightly towards the side of duck, but a ripe fox (or - at a pinch - deer) is his absolute favourite: The Tommy Hilf*ger fragrance in his ultimate beauty-box!

What is it with fox poo?

We have just had a great debate over the fence about foxes.

Mr Mayo has resident foxes that actually climb on his roof and look through his skylight, the pics are on one of his blogs.

Lots of suggestions were offered, from human pee, canine pee, human hair, pics of Les Dawson ( you will need to read up on that one, its a cat look alike) and several other ideas. Anyway, Simon has utilised one of the ideas, with some success.
