A Great Day, or at least a chink of light.

Chris Evans|05:48 UK time, Tuesday, 20 January 2009

So today is the day for one...

Mr. Barack Obama.

Good luck to the guy. Even republicans are wishing him well. That's how much the world needs him at the moment.

A black man in charge of the most powerful nation, for now at least, on planet earth. A nation that has embraced hope and aspiration whilst managing to cast off the shackles of slavery and racial prejudice. The same shackles and prejudice that would have seen Mr. Obama and his family fit for nothing much more than a life of misery and degradation only a few decades ago.

For all that America is at fault, there are many things of which she should be proud. America has, for the most part, been a country far better than the people who have been elected to lead it. This, for me, has been her biggest tragedy. Many of those people have foolishly stood above their country's values, often for personal gain, whilst at the same time choosing to ignore the very roots that gave birth to it's greatness.

Sure they will die having been "PRESIDENT" but so what ? How many presidents' names are really remembered anyway?

Try these out for size:-

Martin Van Buren 1837-1841
Zachary Taylor 1849-1850
Millard Fillmore 1850-1853
Ulysses S. Grant 1869-1877
Chester A. Arthur 1881-1885
Grover Cleveland 1885-1889 and 1893-1897 !
William H. Taft 1909-1913
Calvin Coolidge 1923-1929

Good is palpable, I don't know how or why, I just know it is. This is something the majority of politicians continuously fail to realise. This is their eternal folly. Good is a badge that shines brightly, brightly for all to see. A light for those in the wrong to fear. A light for those with little hope to make it through to the next day.

It is for these reasons we should all be welcoming Mr Obama.

CLP.

I just hope he'll not be stopped by some maniac before he can do some good - that could rip the country apart again.

I expect the worldwide audience at 5.00 our time will be just about the biggest ever for any event. Oops - that's just a Drivetime starts!! Sorry CLP.............

    Morning Christoff et al

Well said. Yes today will be the start of a new era in the West, lets hope all goes well in the coming hardships that the world now faces. And with everyones help we can get out of the mess we're in now.

I'll be watching the ceremony on tv and listening to you on the radio so will not miss the excitement from both sides of the pond.

    Have a good one.

I'm down with everything you wrote there Chris.

I've got a few good friends that live in the good old US of A, and they are just fantastic people. My aunt and uncle also live over there, in upper New York state.

They have got the day off work to watch Mr. Obama take office, filled with both hope and trepidation. It's a big day, and apparently the security measures taken are unprecedented. It's tighter than Jonny Saunders on a night out at the pub :)

By the way, I knew about Chester A. Arthur, he was the 21st president, only because it was featured in the film 'Die Hard With A Vengeance'. History from Hollywood right there. But, we learn life's titbits from the strangest sources, I find.

    Cheryl, you got mail.

    Morning all,
Another early blog from the guvnor! He must be doing something very important today. Perhaps listening to the new U2 album at a private performance by the record company or something!

Very important day indeed! I hope that everybody's expectations are satisfied, 'cos what a presidency that will be! I fear that the weight of expectation may be more than any man (or woman) could possibly deliver! I pray that America will be an Obama Nation not an abomination. Should be an interesting journey, and today is the only the first step!

Withnail and I, I've never seen it! Sorry Chris!

    Sorry, but as an aside......

Thankfully, the whole Kaka to Manchester City debacle is over.

The player is staying at AC Milan. I've gotten bored senseless with the debate. And quite frankly, the possibility of a football club paying 108 million for the man, with the weekly salary touted as being half a million, in the current climate was, basically, obscene beyond belief.

Sense has prevailed, well, at least for the time being.

108 million to kick a ball about for 90 minutes twice a week? Do me a favour.

Ah, Christophe...very thought provoking indeed...although I do have to point out that you missed off Jeremiah P. Wildebeaste 1812 - 1812...who was only in office for 3 months and eleven days until he lost his pencil sharpener.

"After the ceremony, the new occupant of the White House will wave goodbye to his predecessor, before joining the new Vice-President and congressional leaders to feast on pheasant and duck at the traditional inaugural lunch.

Following that, there will be the inaugural parade and a long, long night of ball-going for the new First Couple."

Alwight CLP And ALL Blog Writers And Readers,

    Bingo Star ere.....

CLP - An early blog terdee, must be 'cos yer off ter the special U2 gig at 13.00.... ENJOY!!!!!
Wish I waz going - am tellin' yer!!!!!
Bet The Edge iz gonna be working 'is effects board BIG!!!

And CLP what a very good blog for a special dee terdee.....

Yes terdee is a special dee in world 'istory. Barracks Omama, sorry Obama, iz being sworn in as the first black president. Colour doesn't mean anything ter me, we're all basically 'uman beings, all the same whatever race, colour.
But sadly there iz still so much racism in the world, so for many this makes terdee extra significant.
For me, I just 'ope Obama iz going ter be the president the world needs - an 'onest, level 'eaded person who really iz for the people and will do what's right.
Don't get me wrong, I am a big optomist, but, it's... i'm a little cautious after the lies of our previous politicians.
Remember Blair's 'things can only get better' slogan. Yeah! Look what 'appened there.
And as for Bush... my goodness what frightens me the most is after all the lies, being involved, be it indirectly, in another world leader's execution, starting wars that 'ave killed close to a million and playing a large part in allowing the world economy ter go inter freefall, both Blair and Bush are noot brought ter trial?
I'm sure there iz a god, something else we don't know fully about, all I can say if there iz a god, 'ell and 'eaven then they will get their punishment when they meet their maker!

I agree with CLP, that good always wins in the end. It's strange 'ow bad seems ter be so destructive, so easily and quickly in the short term. But good, although seemingly slower, iz far more powerful and always wins in the end. It's abit like the tortiose and the 'are story - know what am sayin'!!!!!!
Now yer might say am a saying Bush iz a 'are and Obama a tortoise.... a don't know, know, sorry now am getting confused!!
What am saying is maybe at last the world is going ter turn the corner for the better. A just can't believe the trouble between Israel and Hamas, and so near ter Christmas. Over Christmas yer start ter believe in peace a little and look what 'appens.
In 2009 it's about time the world being the global place it is, that the term 'war' should be seen as a word that never 'as ter be used again. Ter me the word 'war' means murder, but far, far more evil and destructive... it's about time the world/ politicians realised war is NEVER a option ter settle disputes.

The world iz a strange place, Bill Clinton waz such a good president.
Did so much for world peace, a lot in Ireland too, yet just because 'e 'as an affair with Monia Lewinsky 'e ends up impeached. Now i'm noot for a second condoning marital affairs but compared ter Bush's crimes. Bush 'as 'ad nothing 'appen ter 'im - the world sometimes iz very puzzling!!

I 'ope Obama is going ter keep all of 'is promises and be for the people rather than just for money and business. Don't get me wrong business is important, it provides jobs, opportunities but lately we seem ter ave lost sight that it's people, 'uman beings living on this world... noot just money!!!!

    Time will tell!!

PS A notice Obama 'as chosen 'illary Clinton as 'is number two, Secretary Of State. I put in me 2008 blog predictions that she waz going ter be president.
I felt so strongly she would be in government and she iz, ok noot president but nearly!!!
'illary of course from the good Clinton family, a sign that Obama iz a very level 'eaded man and realises the value of 'illary.... maybe Obama is showing signs 'e's going ter be a special president... the one the world so badly needs!!!!!

PPS Bill Clinton.... leo.... Barrack Obama.... leo.... Whatta coincidence!!!!!

    GOURANGA!

  • Comment number 26.

PS 'azel Love - Yeah a wrote about the court thingy in December briefly when it waz adjourned!!!

  • Comment number 27.

If a Trillionaire from the Middle East wants to spend his own money to employ a footballer to play for his team, how is that obscene?

It is his money and he can spend it as he likes.

Once again football is being used a the whipping boy for the credit crunch.
There are many other areas of sport and entertainment where people are highly paid , but these don't seem to atract the same level of critisism. F1, a favourite around these parts, springs to mind.

How much is being spent on today's beano in Washington I wonder?

  • Comment number 28.

It all feels very exciting - like we are part of something fantastic and important. That is what I said to my daughters (11 & 8) this morning - when their children grow up today will be taught in school as a historic event and they will be able to say 'I lived through that'! AMAZING

    Chris,

I really enjoyed your blog today, and I hope you are right. I'm sorry, but the cynic in me tells me that politics is just another form of showbiz. I'm just too long in the tooth to believe any politician.

However, what we are seeing today is incredible - a black man as President of the United States. I never thought I would see this in my lifetime. When my oldest sister went to live in the US in 1960, black people had to sit at the back of the bus. If a white person came on, they had to give the white person their seat. Everything was segregated - toilets, the lot. It must have been a nightmare for black people at that time.

But this really is a new dawn, and I do hope this will make a huge change for America.

    Heavy stuff today!

Cheryl: because I had my "serious" face on for my earlier post, I didn't mention your night seeing Russell. I did KNOW he would see you in the audience! Glad you had such a great time - was all your make up washed away by your tears of laughter?

Scooby: glad you really enjoyed the show. I take it Mrs Uptight next to you had no idea what the show is about? Still, things could have been worse - my sister and I went to see Calendar Girls recently and the three women next to us proceeded to drink their carry out during the play, and at one point, one of them was on her mobile phone! Sweet!

B: still stopped smoking - mostly! Have had odd evening of partying and few fags but haven't gone back to smoking and am still committed to giving up long term. If it ends up that I can have the odd cigarette every now and then, I shall be really delighted.

Was it Tobes who said they were giving up today? If so, very best of luck... patches this time, Allen Carr's book last time (of 2 years success).

    Hi y'all!

CtD - Heston Blumingheck.......Came across a wee bit pretentious, but the head of Wee Cook was an absolute Donkey (other terms for this beast of burden more apt!) He was a 60something trying to be hip, constantly quoteing from Ricky Gervais' book on Management "blue sky thinking!" "Outside of the box" etc., wanting Heston to have card blanche, and be experimental - then dissed all his dishes as not experimental enough, even though the public survey said they were too "out there". Worse still he wouldn't give Heston the budget information he needed and hung up on him. Personally got pee'd off with it and won't be watching next episode.

    Glad you enjoyed Russie!

Obama - Good Luck Pal - air of excitement/anticipation/trepidation growing I only hope you are given the chance to prove yourself, and at least YOU know your not the Messiah, Do your best - its all you can do, You won't please all of the people all of the time.

Dipping in again - just as the quiet spell comes to an end!

Hi Scoobs - was Cabaret a close cousin to the film or very different? I'm no fan of Liza M normally but love her singing 'Maybe this time' in that film - goosebumps moment!

I liked Mamma Mia despite some VERY dodgy vocals, as it made me laugh and the scenery is lovely - but it had its tongue firmly in its cheek and has to be taken in that spirit. I think sometimes you have to be in the right mood for a film - right now I don't fancy films with really heavy plot-lines. When the weather and economy are bleak I want cheering up!

    Yeah, it was me Jen.

I gave up for two years after the kids were born. I lapsed back into it, and with me, it's simply self-determination.

I don't need patches, or lozenges or tablets. The thing is, I haven't WANTED to give up before, it just becomes part of your daily routine.

I DO now WANT to give up. So I will. Won't be easy, and after 3 glasses of wine on Friday, no doubt the cravings will rear up. That's where the determination will come in.

I'm not knocking professional help, but the last time I gave up (I was a lot younger) I just quit after a bad run of poor health.

    I am now a non-smoker!!

Bingo I don't think he had been primed by his puppets for a response on that day.

I have mixed feelings about the war though. Saddams party was originally helped to power by JFK.

Saddam though killed thousands of Kurds and invaded Kuwait. One of his son's executed people on a whim I feel it really was a despot ruling a country.

Apart from the citizens of Iraq who have lost their lives. Brave US and British soldiers have died. I would like to think they served their country well.
Iraq is now returning to a democracy where people are not afriad to speak out.

    Just my thoughts anyway.

Prof Plum - It's a difficult one Iraq - Saddam waz a very evil man but I believe we could ave done it like we did with Libya, the peaceful way.
If Obama iz a good president the first thing 'e will do iz meet personally and befriend all of americas 'so called' enemies leaders. Russia, Iran, Korea ter name three.

It could ave been done it a different way with Saddam, make friends with your enemies, even if they are bad people, thus saving the lives of thousands of innocent people.

Some might say we tryed the peaceful way with 'itler and look were it got us, but yer can't always go just by 'istory!!!!

And lets face it.... Iraq... it's all about oil not peace!!!!!!!

Jen - I don't suppose you were ever going to be MM's biggest fan then! I've not seen Princess Bride but think my niece has it on DVD.

Scoobs - I didn't watch the Nancy thing but it's good if someone else got a good job out of it too! Might check that one out, but need to pay off the bill for the F1 tickets first!

Tobes - good luck re the not smoking. Put aside the money you'd normally spend on them and watch it grow (probably not in an RBS account though)! Not that I'm laughing - I bank with NatWest and mr df has lots of Barclays shares which are probably worth about sixpence now!

Looked at Beeb 1 for a few minutes and the excitement was mounting in Washington. Never been there and some of the buildings they drove past surprised me by looking more European in style than those in central Boston or NYC.

Wouldn't touch anything to do with Moyles even if I was wearing gloves. Makes me SEETHE he does.

Anyhoo, at risk of being contraversial...I didn't like Withnail and I, and have tried to watch it on several occasions, even though I am in lust with Richardy Grant...

Scoob, glad you enjoyed it. I remember watching a play, and a lady with a fan was seated next to me...she kept flicking it open and closed. Well, she did for a little while til she nearly had my eye out...then I politely asked her to pack it in and go to the box office to see if the air conditioning could be turned on if she was hot. She didn't come back, and I was really nice...

Dook, I don't think I'll be watching part two either...I was sort of enjoying it right up until Heston said 'eff him', then after the ad break, the two other chefs and the manager blokey were using it as every other word. Totally unnecessary I feel.

    CTD,

The little Chef programme in my brief humble badly written opinion:

Man with No idea hires Man with too many (brilliant) ideas.

Man with no idea wants the Moon on a stick.

Man with idea wants to tailor them to suit man with no ideas budget.

Man with no idea talks a load of corporate psychobabble but still has no idea.

Man with ideas sends two his sidekicks to implement said ideas at man with no idea's restaurant.

Arrogant, up their own A!@%s sidekicks alienate strange life long employee of man with no idea.

Man with ideas bangs head against wall.

Very very good, I have a lot of time for Heston, he's a normal guy doing extraordinary things, and seems to constantly have to defend himself against claims of pomposity and pretentiousness.

Good luck too him, if the mn with no idea worked as hard as Heston...There would be no problem!

Hope this helps, I await the alternative view...assuming you understood my view!

P.S Isn't it nice to have something positive for everyone to focus on for a change...Good luck B.O
