I've just been reading about Lumpy Gravy.

After DC's montage success I think all future montage (plural) should be compiled by the blog - this has a number of advantages:

Blog obscurities get a few seconds airplay: it educates the masses that Freebird is not the alpha and omega of recorded music and it encourages curiosity as what tonight's theme is or what the tracks have to do with it. Maybe it's better than blog bingo.

ps I like the The Phantom Band and have both their albums: they make me feel like hanging out with middle aged wimmin - older the fiddle the better the tune... except when it comes to musical imagination which is the preserve of youth - hence it is completely rational to like music made by younger people as you get older.

Was it the best show since the classical theme? -yes, partly because much of the usual dross was excluded by the theme

Don't really understand the theme. How can you be born too soon unless it's someone that you'd have liked but who didn't start recording till after you were pan breid.

I have to admit that I completely misunderstood this theme. I thought it was going to be artists that I was born too soon to appreciate at the time. Is it just me or was that the kind of slant that ended up happening on last Wednesday's theme?

Norrie, can two songs together be considered a medley or is it a minimum of 3? (If Jim were still with us, he would know). If two count then Mud had no fewer than 3 medleys on Mud Rock:
Do You Love Me/Sha La La La Lee , Shake Rattle and Roll/See You Later Alligator and the medley to top all others, before or since - Dynamite/The Cat Crept In/Tiger Feet.
Curiously on this, their first album, of their six chart hits up to that point, only Rocket featured in its entirety. So there you go…

These days, I love having discussions about music with my kids, I've introduced them to the delights of Pink Floyd, The Stones and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. They, in turn, have made me appreciate everything from Muse to Jack Johnson.

I don't think it would have been possible for me to enjoy such musical discussions if they had been born 10 years earlier. The type of music they enjoy now is much more enjoyable that what was being aired ten or fifteen years ago

As with any other night, there were some that jarred for me, etc. etc. But the rest more than made up for it. Good to hear some fresh songs from up and coming bands. Thoroughly enjoyed most of tonight's playlist.

But I will point out, in my defence (because I now feel defensive), that I rarely ask for something that I have had / has been played already, knowingly. Even if it's a shoo-in. I'm all for fresh - as in great "older" songs that are underplayed as well as recent good ones. It's fantastic to see and hear all the inspired bloggers' suggestions - just get a bit bored with the moaning, sometimes.
