As I’ve said before, it’s hard to feel sorry for Holmes here. After catching his wife bang to rights looking for a bit on the side when she turned up at O Malley’s, he stays with her? I can only assume that Rupert is a bit soft because even after he catches her again, he gives her another chance by asking her to choose between him and the guy who left them smokes behind!
This troubled me a lot in the 70s and I wrote (several times in fact) to Holmes asking why he was so tolerant and who in the end did she choose anyway.
He never wrote back.
