Singing the backing to this is like spinning plates. Stressful in the extreme but if you get it right it's a bit like Graham Norton's solo rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody on Father Ted. There's an opportunity to catch your breath halfway through when the string section are doing their thang.

They were recorded separately, but it wasn't The Honkettes.

The ladies you hear on 'Sweet Home Alabama' are Merry Clayton, Clydie King and Sherlie Matthews.

Following the success of the single the band liked the idea of female backing singers, so after Cassie, Leslie and Jo Jo performed backing vocals on 'Double Trouble' and 'Cry for the Bad Man' in late 1975 they were invited to record and tour with Skynyrd full-time in early 1976.

Incidentally, guitarist Steve Gaines was invited to audition for Lynyrd Skynyrd on his sister Cassie's recommendation. The siblings were, alas, among those killed in the plane crash.


P.S. Paolo, you should be taking notes.

I think there was a happy song, miserable lyrics idea about last year - but I don't think it was done - maybe it was just a debate on the blog... anyway, The Happening by The Supremes is like that. For decades I thought it celebrated sixties optimism, but the lyric reveals good old fashioned misery....( I think). or do I not get it..
