On a brighter note, my copy of Let It Be is apparently worth £200.

Since Thursday is the 40th anniversary of the rooftop concert, the last time the world's greatest band played together in public, it should surely be marked by the playing of a few Beatles songs - many of which are instantly recognisable.

As an idea for a theme, how about songs more famous as covers, for example "Tainted Love" or "Halleluliah"

All Together Now was pretty good. And so is the Pet Shop Boys' version. And Belle & Sebastian's.

It was pretty good when Pachabel wrote it, too.

Now that's totally weird... I am listening to the original tune right now!

Re Sunday Girl

I listened to Sunday Girl before suggesting Denis (#21), because I thought there was some french in it, but there is none in the version of the track I have (from Greatest Hits: Sight and Sound).

I'm sure I have heard it with "depeche toi" replacing "hurry up" in some of the lines, so if Bryan is going to play it he'll need to make sure he has a version which included the french.

Denis has been played before, but not as frequently as Hanging on the Telephone.

What is the most instantly recognisable record of the rock'n'roll era (say 1956 on)?

Based on its sales I would suggest Rock Around The Clock (though a number of buyers may no longer be with us). I would discount Candle In The Wind as it is nondescript. Maybe it's Hey Jude.

'80. I have a 78 of Rock Around The Clock...but it's an inherited copy...I'm not old enough to have bought it when it came out...honest!

Could P McCafferty (or Bryan) please elaborate on Thursday's theme. I don't know if I should suggest tracks that are easily recognisable to the majority of listeners by just their first note, or if the first few notes are OK... does it rule out sung intros...can we ask for songs that we instantly recognise but don't think/care if others are likely to know them? Chances are P McC was fairly precise when he suggested it but the wording on the blog has altered his theme a bit.

Dunno, but I was trying to be pretty strict - 1st note, played or sung.

#87 - I took it that suitable tunes would simply be those that you 'get' straight away. I don't think it has to be quite literally one note. I think they just used the ;name that tune in one' thing because it's a commonly used expression and there used to be a TV programme called 'Name That Tune'.

#90 It's OK...I know about the game show...I just like to be clear about what the themes are supposed to be i.e. what the person who suggested it really meant. Sometimes the content of the theme is changed a wee bit via how it's described on the blog. I wonder sometimes if the GIO team think they'll get a more successful programme by widening a theme and I suspect it's not always necessary. In this case though it may be the other way round. I know I'm being pedantic.
