It was my cousin in the band in Canada, and I have had other cousing in other bands - as it happens my whole family have been musical. My mum was a pianist with an orchestra, and my grandfather (from whom we all got our musical genes) was a conductor (not of a bus! LOL)

Great guy - met him quite a few times when he has played here. He's over here at the moment, I think - no I am not giving anybody his moby number! He still thinks of himself as a Glaswegian. I like that.

Ali and The Winters some SLF would be great - how about Alternative Ulster as a track which suits the theme?

DC I have never heard Sineads version of Raglan Road but I love Van and The Chieftans version of this so would like to hear either version.

Scotch - sorry to be pedantic but so that the producers can locate it I think the track you are suggesting is I'll Tell Me Ma, and its a good call!

Can I second Aliandthewinters shout for Sinead O Connor, Jump In The River - something other than Nothing Compares 2U would be good!!

Mazz - I do know what you mean. Sinead has made loads of good records, but I for one always have a wee greit to Nothing compares 2 U as it is just such a phenomenally great track - and she was right to make the video all about the simple delivery of the song. Powerful stuff. One of the best videos ever, and proves the rule that simple is usually best.

North Sea Gas do a great version of Raglan Road as well. Still I must admit I love Van and the Chieftans.

No doubt that Nothing Compares is a great track with an iconic video and it does hold a special place in my heart too (teenage heartbreak and anxiety was rife at that time for me) but what I love about GIO is the times you hear a song you're not expecting and you think, blimey, forgotten how good this is hence the Jump In The River backing....know what I mean? Guess thats why we are all here and blogging!!

I half heartedly try and cover up my Divine Comedy remark, the Skids are wonderful and deserve greater exposure.

Norrie - I was close to adding the Skids to my list but in the end left them out assuming others would ask for them anyway.

I think this week is a great theme week. Its an open ticket to having your tracks played.

JIm - one of these bands, get deeper than the singles, say Of One Skin, Arena, Happy To Be With You, Peaceful Times....brilliant!

Sinead sings 'On Raglan Road' on the Pure Celtic Chillout album. It's by favourite version. Come on Bryan, play this track and educate the bloggers!

Paul Brady's 'The Island' is a song about Ireland itself and also well worth playing (also from the same album)
