Snap, Crackle....Drop! #8

This week we're not going back too far for Snap Crackle Drop, but we are going relatively early for the hardstyle scene!! The year was 2003 and the Euro hard trance sound was becoming a little tired and some producers and DJ's where looking for a harder evolution. For the previous few years a sounds called Hardstyle had been emerging form the underground scene in Holland, and at this time was really starting to get noticed! One DJ from Japan was really riding the line between hard trance and hardstyle, Yoji Biomekanaka, and there was no better example than "Hardstyle Disco", switching up the styles throughout the track! Although it was massive at the time, it seems to have been forgotten, but just one listen to this track will remind you how good it still sounds today!!!

This week I decided to go for something euphoric, winding the clock back a modest 10 years for some classic Euro hard trance!DJ Kim was a well established euphoric trance producer back then, and his latest offering at the time named "Jetlag" (clearly named after his DJ lifestyle), was a big favourite of mine, but not tough enough to play in my DJ sets...Step in Alphazone, to pump it up a few notches, not in any way brutally hard, but just that bit tougher for the harder floors! An amazing piece of actual 'music', which I'll be honest you can't always say, even about some of the best tracks that are really just hard. The riff still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and key changes will melt your heart!!A little over the top descriptively? Mebby, but I don't care, I love it!!

The Amen Breaks

Hello there fellow breakheads!! I recently made a documentary researching the history of the most sampled 6 second drum loop of all time known as the "amen break"!! I n the doc people talked a lot about 'sampling' the loop, so i thought I would put together a quick 'show and tell' video, very basic, for anyone that has no knowledge of music production, but is interested in how people sample the amen break!!! Nero

This week sees the world of sub-bass take over BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra with the first dualstation Dubstep Week. The genre itself has come a long way: from its roots in the ashes of the Croydon Garage scene 10 years ago to becoming the international phenomenon it is today. It’s not the first time 1Xtra have had a Dubstep Week (the first was on my show in 2009) but the fact that Radio 1 are coming along for the ride this time round is testament to the popularity of the British sound.

I could go in with the history lesson on this post, but it’s a lot more entertaining if you check out the Story of Dubstep documentary currently on the iPlayer.

There’s loads of things going on across the week to celebrate:

If you missed my regular Xtra Dubstep Xtra Bass show on Saturday night, then make sure you catch up with it here I work hard each week to make sure we’re representing the full 360 of the scene so this week, alongside new tracks from Pinch, Plastician, DCult, Kutz and Foreign Beggars ft Skrillex; I went behind the Beats with Chase and Status and Bristol badboy Joker provided us with a sick exclusive 25 minute guest mix. Check it out here.

You should know by now about the BBC Philharmonic presents Nero’s Dubstep Symphony spectacular that will be taking place tonight live from BBC’s MediaCityUK in Salford (in fact, I’m writing this blog post on the way up to Manny!) so I won’t bang on about how amazing it’s going to be. You can watch the live stream here and also make sure you listen live to Zane Lowe and I on Radio 1 and 1Xtra from 7pm tonight.

On my 1Xtra show, we’ll be celebrating all forms of Dubstep as we always do with the Daily Dose of Dubstep. To the uninitiated, I turn over an hour of my show each night at 9pm to all forms of Dubstep. Monday to Wednesday normally sees some of the biggest DJs and Producers from across the multi-faceted scene take over with an hour long guest mix while Thursdays usually has me wading in with my big size 12’s in the mix.

However, for #DubstepWeek (getting used to the twitter hashtag, sorry!) later tonight after Nero and the BBC Philharmonic have finished, the mighty Jakwob and I will be back to back for a special live Daily Dose Mix exclusively on 1Xtra from 9pm. Tuesday night sees the True Tiger boys take their turn on rotation while Wednesday night sees Quest representing the mighty Deep Medi family with a deeper Dubstep mix. Then on Thursday night, the International superstars of Sub Bass that are Skream and Benga will bring their monthly In New DJ’s We Trust show to both Radio 1 and 1Xtra live for the first time ever.

Plus if you have a spare 2 minutes, have a play with this, the Dubstep Soundboard . I say 2 minutes, I have actually spent about 4 hours on there having a play around. It’s a great revision break tool, although please don’t forget to go back to revision afterwards!

Personally I hope the week will become an entry point for people to get deeper into the Dubstep & Bass world. While we’re probably still a long way off from hearing darker tracks on daytime radio playlists, it’s exciting to see the scene grow from strength to strength with each release. What are you most looking forward to this week?

This is my homage to the medium of past for DJs, vinyl. We all still love it and I have a feature we call Snap Crackle….Drop!

I was out in Australia recently and when I was setting up in the club a guy said to me real DJs play vinyl mate. Yeah but no, I tried to explain music is mainly not released on vinyl anymore…. I said to him I could see where this is going mate. If it wasn’t so loud in the club I would have explained to him about Snap Crackle...Drop.

The track I've got this week is the first hard style record I ever bought in 2002, I didn’t even know it was hard style at the time…. It's on a label called Wicked that went on to become one of the biggest labels, but it was my first exposure: Raptor - Brain Damage.

Kutski Tears It Up Down Under

Once a year I jam my lanky legs into an undersized seat and get as comfortable as possible for an impending 30hrs hours mind numbing boredom... Why, I hear you cry, would you voluntarily inflict this on yourself?? Well, just take a look at some of the pictures below. Australia has one of the most vibrant hard dance scene in the world and has done for more than a decade to my knowledge, with DJ's from all over the world making a point of touring at least once a year.

On my 2 week tour this time, one gig stood out to me as being particularly amazing, Magic City in Sydney!! Held at a 5000 capacity pavilion just outside the centre of the city, the whole event was a massive rave themed like a boxing event, with each DJ battling a fellow DJ.
Between sets, the music stopped and a ring announcer hyped the crowd while each DJ was escorted through the masses in full boxing rob and gloves with scantily clad girls bearing flags of the representing counties!! This all added to the already crazy atmosphere, and when I hit play on my first track, I actually thought the place was going to cave in!!

It's always great to visit different countries and therefore different clubbing cultures, as you always leave taking some new knowledge and inspiration home with you. This time i've come home on the hunt for a pavilion and someone to fight... In musical context, of course!!
