Marlene Enright – Underbelly

Monday 16th May, 2016

They Say: “Underbelly is the second of my solo single releases and will be on my debut solo album which I'm trying desperately hard to have ready for a January '17 release! It's a more playful song that many of my others, perhaps it was the time of year that I wrote it but I was listening to a lot of RnB and soul, even a little bit of funk, which I'm not normally a huge fan of funnily enough, and I think this seeped into my creativity.

I have always loved the really close (and often slightly odd) harmonies of the likes of D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, and I like to bring a little of that into my songs when needed. The lyrics flowed easier for this one, I even wrote one verse in the studio which I have NEVER done, I usually spend forever on the lyrics, agonising (too much sometimes) over the word used, the sound of it, the shape of it. This feels like a simpler song, light-hearted, lyrically more direct. It was fun to record it too.

Davie Ryan (drums), Eoin Walsh (bass), Hugh Dillon (guitar) and myself spent a day with Christian Best, a fantastic engineer with a lovely studio in Midleton and got it done in a few hours. Hope you enjoy!”

We Say: “The beautifully realised instrumentation and high production values on ‘Underbelly’ provide the perfect backbone to Marlene Enright’s wonderfully soulful yet economical vocals. Catchy and vivacious, this track showcases great musicianship across the board“.

‘Underbelly’ is the second single from Cork singer Marlene Enright, and is available to buy as of Friday 13th May.
