The Making of - Droids

Across The Line

As you'd expect, we're beside ourselves about all the BBC Introducing events happening at the Nerve Centre in Londonderry this week, which we've curated (alongside Electric Mainline) as part of the build up to One Big Weekend. It's a great chance for us to show off Northern Ireland's finest, with the emphasis on the best of the maiden city. Ahead of their performance tonight alongside Axis Of and Gerardi2, here's Johnny McGinley vocalist and guitarist with spikey Derry noiseniks Droids. Johnny's here to talk us through what makes him and his band tick as part of our 'The Making Of' series....

****

The first record I bought was Jamiroquai - Travelling Without Moving. One of the funkiest records I have to date. All big hats and awesome dance moves!

The last record I bought was kind of a double header, Lafaro - Easy Meat, and ASIWYFA - All Hail Bright Futures, maybe a month apart, but they arrived on the same day. Winner winner chicken dinner.

I went to see Gomez in the Nerve Centre, back in 2000 I think, and that was the gig that made me want to be in a band. They were so good and looked to be having a blast to boot. Coincidentally, Mick, our drummer, was at the same show, but I didn't really know him then.

If I had to choose one musician that inspired me to start playing music it would have to be Dave Grohl - Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Qotsa, Them Crooked Vultures - he's written/co written some of the greatest songs of the past 20-25 years. In my opinion he's a beast behind the kit, and he's won the 'nicest guy in rock' award about a gazillion times. Sound.

I'm not sure what the last gig that Droids all watched together was, so I'll have to go with Triggerman at Glasgowbury last year, they were on after us and they demolished the place. Standard for aul Triggs.

The last album we were all into would probably be Hawk Eyes - Ideas. I love them and I kinda forced it upon the lads while on tour, but they dug it. Whats not to dig? Big riffs followed by even bigger riffs! I'd say that Tool are definitely the one band we all totally agree on though. Everything about them just oozes cool.

There's a few local acts we'd gladly share a stage with night after night, but if we were pushed we'd prob go with the lads from Stillpoint. Theyre class craic, and theyre flawless live, every time.

If I could have anyone join the band it would be J-Ho from QOTSA, get him on vocals and ill sit at the back doing rythym and backing vox. He's a dreamboat.

The only cover we ever did was Thrice - All That's Left, I think we played it in our first headline show in Derry in a little sweaty packed castle bar .

My guilty pleasure would probably be Billy Joel, just a few songs now and again, but that's bad enough I suppose!
