Limelight 2, Belfast
Sunday, 19th January 2014
Opening for a band with such a dedicated following as Sheffield's 65daysof staticwas always going to be a tall order. Thankfully the near capacity crowd at Belfast's Limelight 2 are greeted by our very own Axis Of. Years of extensive touring, along with the release of their debut album 'Finding St Kilda', have seen this riff heavy three piece grow tighter in both a musical and performative sense. The band's beautifully constructed rock captured the audience from the opening notes, bringing people forward towards the barriers in approval.
Their incredible stage presence saw them erupt out of the blocks, provoking near manic on-stage dancing, adding to the sheer exuberance of their performance. Bassist Ewen Friers’ melodic vocals are beautifully balanced by his edgy delivery. It’s a balance which works flawlessly, as the band continue to push the boundaries of Rock and Punk, ending somewhere perfectly poised in-between.
Playing an array of new material is a brave move on such a big stage, but instead of phasing them, it seems to only make them more determined. Impeccably tight, with their single 'Lifehammer' being a highlight, its further proof that Axis Of are one of the best live acts in the country.
Next, it’s time for the headliner. Now on their 6th album, the Yorkshire 4-piece have returned to Belfast for only their second time. Yet, they still manage to pull in a dedicated and expectant audience. 65daysofstatic create the sort of sonic landscape most bands can only dream of perfecting. Like an aggressive Sigur Ros, they entrance you from the moment their ambient tones echo thorough the building. Such are the depths of their hypnotic post rock, you feel they could play the same song all night and easily keep the audience enthralled. It's rare for a band to transcend the art of heartfelt lyricism, yet 65daysofstatic seem to somehow capture the inner turmoil of a troubled mind perfectly through their captivatingly loud presence. A great night for all involved.
