Pascalwillnotsurvivethis – Treetops
Everybody knows that the summertime is when you finally crawl out of the darkness, and get back out there to reconnect with the outside world. Or that’s the plan, anyway. And if that’s proving to be difficult for you, allow Northern Irish troubadour Pascalwillnotsurvivethis to take you on a journey through some lush forests in his new single, ‘Treetops’.
A bed of gently picked acoustic guitar provides the backdrop for the plaintive voice of Danny McClelland, as he details that uncertain feeling we’ve almost all felt at some point when we can’t quite trust our own mind. “Deflated and feeling weightless,” he sings, as an atmospheric electric guitar snakes around the acoustic, and before we know it, subtle keyboards have joined the mix, with a tapestry of backing vocals meshing together to create something really rather beautiful.
And with such a delicious blend of sounds, we need a video to match. Zool records have pulled out a belter, with a glitch forest unfolding in front of us, as we delve deeper and deeper into the greenery, feeling a little bit like the spirits in The Evil Dead, as we fly along the forest floor, brushing the leaves past. Before long, we’re flying over the treetops, and McClelland even makes a little cameo, playing guitar in front of a green-screen, and sporting a moustache that could maybe do with a little pruning (#justsaying).
All in all it’s another beguiling release from this artist, until now best known for his work with other acts like Jealous of the Birds and Born Only Yesterday. After this little trip into nature, it’s safe to expect that plenty of people will be paying attention to whatever Pascalwillnotsurvivethis does next.
