The Soft Look - Beautiful
He Says: “The female vocal popped into my head one day and I got my wife, Meaghan to sing it into Ableton. I was pretty sure it would become my most upbeat song as my lyrics are usually quite downbeat with more 'positive' musical accompaniment. I could actually see a full-on happy song on the horizon. However, 'Beautiful' ended up as a mix of upbeat lyrics and darker synths as this vocal held more of an emotional quality than I'd realised. I created some interesting rhythmic and atmospheric sounds and when I put it all together I could almost sense a 90's trance vibe which made me feel nostalgic, excited and happy. I'm pretty sure that's probably the best combination of feelings to feel while listening to / or writing a song! I'll soon be finishing off some other songs and an EP will be released in late-Spring/early-Summer.”
We Say: “The work of Paul McIver, formerly of Cutaways and a mess of other fine quirky pop acts, all of which were rinsed on ATL - so our expectations were rather high. With 'Beautiful' Paul has certainly delivered, albeit while becoming more curious than ever. Weird and wonderful production, lush duetting vocals and a style that's unique, to the point we've no idea how to pigeon hole. So we'll not bother...”
