This week Niall Byrne joined Rigsy to talk about some of their favourite new releases including…

All Tvvins - Thank You

Niall: “
All Tvvins came from the ashes of two bands…Lar Kaye from Adebisi Shank…and the other half of twins is Conor Adams from The Cast of Cheers, so the two of those guys have got together. And they’re making some really interesting, really nice and melodic and pleasing Indie music, which is kind of ‘80s and a bit of everything – I really like it …it’s their first proper single.”

The Academic - Different

Rigsy:
“A band getting a fair amount of hype in the last little while…”

Niall: “They’re a promising young band…they’re from Mullingar, I saw them last year do a gig and I was really impressed by their stage performance…I think they’re playing the right game at the moment...it’s a great track.”

New Portals - Standing Over Here

Rigsy: “
Well they have branched out a little bit from The Jepettos… a new project with a slightly more electro feel…produced by Scott from GO WOLF…The new electro vibes arguably suit Ruth’s voice even more. So they’re an itchy bunch, not sure what to be at the moment, but as long as the music is consistently as good and lovely as this who cares…”

Niall: “I like this now… it’s kind of ‘Cashmere Cat’ meets ‘Young Wonder’ kind of buzz to it.”

The Gloaming – Hunting The Squirrel

Rigsy: “
The Gloaming, from Donegal, winning the Choice Prize for 2015…the Irish album for the year for the last twelve months…funny enough I kind of had it in my head that they would be a kind of solid bet – so well done to The Gloaming.”

Niall:
“I actually did put a bet on…it’s a worthy winner…they’re excellent musicians...and this is certainly music of Ireland and what it does is take traditional music and kind of put a new spin on it…It’s not just a Trad album, it’s very much a cinematic… a contemporary release totally, so a deserved winner for me.”

Yusin featuring Abbi Press - Ambush

Rigsy: “
Two guys based in Leeds but originally from Derry/ Londonderry - Sean and Jamie working with a vocalist called Abbi Press on this one, she’s from Brooklyn…this is pretty kind of spectacular in my head - a very very dramatic sound from Yusin.”

Niall: “It’s very cinematic, I could imagine it...doing an alternative sound track to The Matrix.”

The Hard Ground – Pucker

Rigsy:
“This is just absolutely wonderful…loving this…it’s kind of wonky... but… not too much.”

Niall: “So they are a band from Cork and they are about to release their 3rd EP…and it’s an absolute beaut...I love the vocal.”

SertOne - Lost & Found

Niall: “
I think Sert has a great talent for creating these kind of tracks…it’s really nice to hear a vocalist like this on it - gives it a really nice pop edge I think.”

Conor Edgar - 5.4

Rigsy: “
Banging, kind of dark room techno…Conor Edgar is a Belfast based producer and DJ …and this is made for a smoky room where you can’t see your mates, cause it’s just too kind of dark and kind of vaguely creepy – the type of places that we always find ourselves in music festivals…”

Niall: “I just have one question – are we going clubbing after this?!...Let’s do this.”
