Anna Leyden - Sparks
Friday 20th January 2017
They say: “Sparks is the title track from my debut EP. I wrote it when I was around fifteen, making it one of the first songs I ever wrote. I suppose it’s all about that exhilarating experience of first love as a teenager, y’know, sparks flying everywhere and all that.
But I’ve found it lovely to have continued singing it as I’ve gotten older, and I suppose it will continue to mean different things to me as time goes by.
Having been brought up by singers I was surrounded by music right from the start. If I had to choose an album I was most inspired by it would have to be The Whole Story by Kate Bush, every song on it is just fantastic!”
We say: “Staccato piano with just a touch of satisfying discord provides the backdrop for Anna Leyden’s ‘Sparks’, but what truly elevates the track is Anna’s vocals. Refreshing in their purity, the timbre and range is impressive and enthralling. As mentioned, the Kate Bush influence is palpable, but the track stands out confidently on its own.
Building to a spine-tingling harmony-laden crescendo, ‘Sparks’ ignites a tangible sense of frisson; a whirlwind of emotions.”
The ‘Sparks’ EP was released in December 2016 and is available to stream for free and download now.
