Roe ‘Down Days’

Right at the start of her career, Roe was saddled with the ‘grumpy electro-pop’ tag, which would literally translate as electro-pop that was short-tempered or irritable, even perhaps disagreeable. If you saw these behaviours in a friend, you’d tell them “It’s ok not to be ok,” and you’d listen to what they had to say. But if you’re Roe, you write ‘Down Days’. The song starts simply on piano before swallowing melodies in glitchy harmonious production, like a thousand suffocating voices all at once, unable to reach out, unable to say ‘I’m not ok’.

This is a huge and challenging song so early into an artist’s career. A conversation most of us put off our entire lives, Roe meets the subject of living with a lack of mental fitness head-on and in the most beautiful way. The song is inspiring and the message is strong; you’re not alone, and your down days will pass. A down-beat song by a grumpy artist proves that two negatives can make a positive, so more ‘Positive' electro-pop’ then, surely?
