Space Dimension Controller – Mr 8040’s Introduction
Jonny: ‘I just bought his record on purple vinyl…listening to this album properly from start to finish, it’s just such a masterpiece. It’s a galactic funk, concept record.’
Rigsy: ‘It’s an album that would kind of work listening to it on vinyl and just sitting back.’
Oh Volcano – Oceans
Jonny: ‘It is Owen Strathern from General Fiasco and his new project. I love it. Kind of reminds me of a Dev Hynes production…it’s electronica with a nice beat. I much prefer it to General Fiasco.’
Rigsy: ‘It’s fairly different to General Fiasco…it’s really interesting stuff.’
Swords – Hips
Rigsy: ‘It is a reminder of how good their debut album was. Just a beautiful vocal very curiously recorded.’
Jonny: ‘It has that soundtrack feel, like a moment in a movie. Really nice.’
Fort Road & Tanko feat. The Goodfellas – Dark From The Light
Rigsy: ‘The man making the beats is Fort Road, a prolific producer from Carrickfergus…the guy who he’s working alongside for this track is called Tanko in Chicago. They did that Postal Service thing back and forth. Then Tanko hooked up with Goodfellas also from Chicago to provide the rap…Kendrick Lemar esque storytelling vibes of this tune. So it’s bizarrely Carrick meets Illinois, bit of a soundclash and it’s utterly unique.‘
Malibu Shark Attack – Better Off As Friends
Jonny: ‘I love everything about this, everything!..it’s kind of similar to Anticon’s label and to Sage Francis, where it is smart, clever, kind of witty hip-hip.’
Small Hawk Orchestral – Deathbed Repentance
Jonny: ‘What are they feeding people up in the North Coast!? What is it with all this North Coast hardcore? It’s completely insane.’
Rigsy: ‘If you’re from the North Coast and you hit a certain age it seems like you’re handed a guitar and an amp.’
Axecatcher – Cinder
Rigsy: ‘From Limivady, formed in 2011…I always rave about the amount of guitars used in Northern Ireland is probably more per-head than anywhere else in the UK, here it’s always been noisy and it seems to still be the case.’
Jonny: ‘What is amazing about this is that it is not like they are trying to follow some kind of trend…They’re all making this kind of music because they want to make this kind of music.’
