Across The Line

Charlene Hegarty of Smalltown America Records joined Rigsy this week to discuss their favourite new local releases.

Aoife Underwater – On the Cusp of Nothing

Charlene: “It’s just a really fresh atmospheric kind of Synth-Pop track. Within all of that there’s lots of music I like. You can hear that she’s taken influences from maybe The Knife and other just amazing Scandinavian bands like that… The productions really good on it”

Rigsy: “Yeah very European this… It’s a big, big pop sound isn’t it?”

Lotti – Stay Awake

Rigsy: “This is Charlotte Gordon, a 19 year old from Derry City. She’s definitely got two things; a unique voice, and a real spark of creativity. It is early days for Lotti, but definitely something we will be keeping an eye on.”

MKAI - Waiting

Charlene: “Since the last time we played it, they’ve officially released it – and it went in at number 11 on the iTunes chart and then soared up to number 3 (the iTunes Ireland chart) putting Taylor Swift off her seat.”

Rigsy: “One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer; that’s fair enough. But to be number 3 after those two, that’s pretty impressive stuff… MKAI doing a Hozier – taking over the world one territory at a time.”

GANGS - Back To School

Rigsy: “Few things to say about this lot; Very, very hard working – gigging loads and about top play shows alongside The Strypes. Fantastic musicians as well, they kinda boast about how they’re classically trained guitarists in their ranks, and you can kinda tell… Really, really confident sounding band – justified confidence. Definitely my favourite new track on the show this week.”

The Jepettos - Shimmer

Charlene: “This track is beautiful. It’s part of a four track EP that’s available now. They wrote it as part of a children’s space odyssey theatre project... Now it’s a really interesting project because it’s for pupils aged 15 to 18 with profound and multiple learning difficulties - so I couldn’t admire these guys more.”

Rigsy: “Yeah they’re a band who can do no wrong… they seem to just get sweeter and sweeter. A husband and wife duo as well.”

Aviance - Intermission

Charlene: “A talented young Dungannon born electronic producer called Eoin Forker. The track is amazing and I actually genuinely think he’s really good and he’s got a bright future.”

Warriors Of The Dystotheque - Hashtag

Rigsy: “The work of Jonny Mac, a DJ from the Maiden City who’s played across the world. But for this project Warriors Of The Dystotheque, Jonny Mac is working alongside a guy from France and Mike and Nick from New York City so it’s a globe spanning line up. Lovely way to round up this week’s New Music exchange.”
