New Tune Disco 23.03.15

Chris Jones joined Rigsy and Stu to discuss some of their favourite new releases including:

And So I Watch You From Afar – WASPS

Chris: “It’s a fantastic record. I like them best when they’re being brooding and epic as they did on places in the first album and especially on Gangs. The nice thing about the vocals is that their accents all come through loud and clear, which I love.”

Abandcalledboy – George Best

Chris: “It’s a good tune. They’re a band that have been around for a while but they’ve changed their line up slightly recently…they’ve got Chris Ryan from Robocobra Quartet in on drums…They’ve gone a sort of noise rock direction that’s a little bit more dissident and abrasive, which I kind of like.”

Rigsy: “They strike me as a band who are stuck between wanting to make really creative interesting music and wanting to muck about!

Susie Blue – Trust Me

Stuart: “I think musically she’s probably got a little way to go and it almost sounds like she’s finding her own direction…there’s little hints of Sinead O’Connor in that but there’s a bit of spike in it as well. I think there will be more of an edge as she finds her feet…I would say watch this space.

R51 – Pillowtalk

Rigsy: “Every time I hear this I like it a little bit more…”

Chris: “The Oh Yeah Centre’s Scratch My Progress programme has re-launched again for next year and R51 are one of the bands that were on it this year…it’s been great to see the progress the bands have made.”

Lonesome Astronaut - The Reality Machine

Chris: “This is a thing of absolute beauty...I really love the spoken sample in there as well. There’s a real spectral quality to it and I think it’s gorgeous. The synth melodies, the acoustic guitar, all works together beautifully…there’s quite a crunchy beat to it as well.

Stuart: “It’s a bit mythical and a bit beautiful - it’s a bit Major Tom.”

The Titanics – Call It Out

Rigsy: “It’s the stand out on their debut release…bit more of a punch, bit more of edge, bit more of a kick, but still catchy. Early days for this band…I’m certainly glad to have them on my radar.”

Fort Road – So Long Winter

Chris: “This really reminds me of some of Mogwai’s more peaceful moments…I’m a sucker for a really nice drum line and there’s a nice groove to that pulling it along and the piano melody’s gorgeous too.
