This week, Rigsy was joined by Niamh Hegarty to chat about some of their favourite new music.

Axis Of – Wetsuit

Rigsy: “The more I listen to it the more I go… actually you know what this is still Axis Of, it’s just a slightly different sound… Great, great piece of music.”

Niamh: “I think it’s just a more grown up sounding Axis Of… I’m just so excited they’re bringing out a new album.”

September Girls – Black Oil

Niamh: “It’s just a fantastic track from their brand new Veneer album… For me; they’re just a band that get progressively cooler with each release… When I think of them they just kind of almost transport you to the 60’s… and just that whole era.”

Rigsy: “Yeah this is brilliant, it really is. So, so dark that the vocals buried and stuff, just the way the productions done - confidence is the word really.”

Monkeeman – Pressure

Rigsy: “It actually sounds a wee bit like Kaizer Chiefs whenever I play it on the radio… Let’s compare them to early Blur… They have strength in numbers as well they’ve snet us so much stuff in the last kind of 18 months – I’ve pretty much loved all of it. Some of it sounds like kinda Copper Blue era Sugar in there as well, kind of classic indie sound.”

Niamh: “Initially I wasn’t too sure but the more I listened to it the more I’m enjoying it. I would love to give them more of a go and see them live, definitely.”

Wife – Living Joy

Niamh: “Wife is just back from representing Ireland in the Musical Olympics… It was just an incredible live set by the sounds of it… This track is a stand out track. He’s just an example of an artist who’s continuously pushing boundaries.”

The Secret Animals – Empty Vase

Rigsy: “The Secret Animals are five folks based in Belfast. Prolific on the gig scene but relatively new to me and thus to our playlists. I just love a track with this type of shuffling... Very, very jangilly. It’s very low-fi recording I’m not sure if that’s a deliberate thing… Really, really lovely vocal in there too.”

Niamh: “It’s gorgeous actually; I think this is a gorgeous track.”

Night Trap – Someone Like You

Niamh: “I think this initially was a side project that’s kind of evolved into something more focused, and I think it’s just gorgeous. The lovely warm synth sounds and lovely harmonies just make it something that I imagine would fit in really well on a Future Sounds tour.”

Elastic Sleep – Slip

Niamh: “It’s from their latest EP Leave You. such a great track. I love the baseline so much. They are one of my favourite Irish bands… one of the

key acts pumping life in to the southern scene at the moment.”

Gabriel Paschal Blake – Jack the Sly

Rigsy: “I just like the feel of this track. The vocal especially I feel again I presume deliberately toned down production, just a sort of a laid back… like a pleading vibe in the vocal, just a real kind of charm.”

Niamh: “I can’t believe he’s a teenager. He reminds me of Hozier… He has so much potential”
